Description Yes, I made a new tutorial! This time it's about how scanners work and how I edit drawings in Photoshop.

I know I said I wouldn't make any more tutorials, but I got soooooooooo many questions about this, and it's something I won't be putting in my artbook anyway, so I've been working on this all day long.

And now I'm tired...

Oh well, hope it's useful

Thank you! My drawings always get more annoying details after scanned than irl.
Thaaaanks!

dunno if you guys have tried it.. but when the scan starts turning out lighter than the original (thus destroying those minute details) a good way to overcome it is to put a black color piece of paper behind the drawing before scanning it...

hope that helps..
cheers..

Thanks for posting this. It's a great tutorial. I have a lot of those problems when scanning pencilwork and it's a pain.

Those evil scanners.

Great tutorials. I'm so glad I found your tutorial becaue you've covered almost all my questions.

One question I have about this is have you ever had the problem where your whole drawing doesn't scan, or it's blurry/dodgy in one area? Sorry if that's more than one question...

Also... I knew it was Ewan even before I read that it was.

Hm, I'm going to use this...a lot .Is it possible to fix the gainy look in PS too? Sometimes my dark areas have a grain sort-of look.

whoa!!You got the same laser scanner I have. I am so excited. I now know that my art quality will be the same with you after photoshop. But I got a question. If the outline W.I.P. scan is so light that you can't see some lines and I don't adjust it at first. Will the darkness affect those lines in photoshop? What I mean is say the picture i scanned is so light that with a naked eye it seems blank. Then I put it in photoshop and darken it, will all the parts show up it I darken it enough? Thanks for your help

That's cool!! Are you have troubles with the software too by the way? The software doesn't want to work properly because of the new versions of Internet Explorer.

As for your question, I'm not really sure I understand you completely but I think I have an idea what you mean!

When you scan a piece of paper with outlines only, the lines can barely be seen with the bare eye indeed. What I always do in such cases is
- open the file in Photoshop
- go to Image > Adjustments > Levels
- move the middle grey arrow underneath the contrast box to the right.
You'll see the lines of the lineart with change their contrasts, but the background will be plain white.

Good luck!

oh, thank you, so I don't really have to use the HP scanning program to adjust it first? I just directly go to photoshop and change it? Well I'll try that, I believe it'll work

It is very useful! Perhaps my draws were in order to better, if I improved them. But I think that correcting is a little fraud however.

(sorry for my bad english......)

Thanks for this tutorial! I'll have a go when I get home! I was gonna invest in a "good" scanner because the quality of my scanned images were so poor. I felt I couldn't do traditional stuff and load them online!

Cataclysm-X In reply to TragicUglyDuckling [2008-08-14 18:49:06 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it!

Are you still planning to buy a better scanner? Usually the quality doesn't make a difference. It's the way how you edit them with the software of the scanner itself or with Photoshop for instance.

twilitshadow [2008-07-03 11:39:53 +0000 UTC]

What I find most difficult is making the picture so lifelike (with the lighting and contrast, I mean). Whenever I edit my pics, I always end up with a scan that is far too crisp and looks like someone sprinkled snowflakes all over it. It looks extremely strange. >,<

Oh well, if I get a new one, I'll deffinately being using this tutorial. Oh, and congradulations on the DD!

This will be so much help to me, since I do a lot of traditional pencil work and the way it fades is incredibly frustrating. Thanks for providing this for everyone

Just wondering if there's any tips to improve colour fading, or do you just work in greys?

ahahha!!! I used to do the last example a lot! HAHHAHA!
but well, I think also depend on the scaner some times. I just throw away my old one because it was inside a multi-funcion machine and it went really good, but the new one it's so bad.. I really can't scan anything good in there now =_=''''

u did a really nice job w it!!
