Description
...::EDIT::...Larger and edited file on request.
Several people were complaining about the small font. Leaving critiques and comments are more than welcome, but I just don't like it when people use my tutorials and at the same time nitpick about the smallest things and don't even leave a "thank you" note.
So for those who do appreciate the 30 hours I spent in writing and drawing this tutorial: I uploaded a larger file. You can click download for full size.
...Whoa...
This is a MASSIVE tutorial I did in only 2 freakin' days! LOL.
I said I would do a gift for you all because someone hit the 60.000 pageviews. Besides, I got over 1550 watchers and my drawings of Vincent and House got over 1000 favourites.
Ooohh look at the pretty colors. My previous tutorials look quite boring compared to this baby.
Ehm... what else to say...
Have fun!

Tortillions cannot be reused except for smudged areas.
However, blendingsticks can be used more often if you sharpen them with a pencil sharpener or sandpaper!!

Some advice for the tortillions (? I personally refer to them as blending sticks but they're the same)
You can attack them with an eraser to remove the pencil, but I sometimes I just stick them in a pencil sharpner, It works.

awesome tutorial, very detailed, I'm sure it's gonna be very helpful to people...
I'm not sure if anyone commented on this before, I can't really read through all the 500+ comments, but in the part where you mentioned tortillions, you said you don't know a way to reuse them...use sand paper
that's what I do, it's very easy and you don't have to buy new tortillions every time you need to shade in light places. You just rub it across the sand paper a few times until the dark/used layer rubs off... I hope I didn't just repeat someone else's comment

Great tut.
Also, you can sharpen tortillons in *manual* pencil sharpeners. With a lot of patience.

Excellent tutorial and very helpful. I love shading but I only recently discovered tortillons. They have made such a difference to my work and are a genius invention considering they are such simple things.

Hmm, I always learned that using your fingers, tissues or the tortillions are generally frowned upon in the art world. :0 You use them very effectively, but whenever I see someone trying to do it in art class, they instantly get marked-down. What do you think?

yup it sure is! When I made this tutorial I didn't use Q-tips yet but lately I do. They're quite useful. Though if you want to blend really small areas, tortillions will be the best.
Thanks for your nice comment

Thanks for putting this tutorial up !
I found it was very helpful and answered all the questions I wanted to know for shading with pencils. But I want to know, can these techniques also be applied with charcoal - or should you use different techniques altogether?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Cataclysm-X In reply to nakatsuki [2008-10-30 18:48:02 +0000 UTC]
Hi there sorry for the late answer!
It should be able to add the same techniques to charcoal artworks. From what I know is that blending sticks are mostly used by those who create charcoal and pastel drawings. Tortillions are made for pencil drawings.
Also, charcoal is easier to blend and so these techniques will be even a lot more easier!
Hope my answer helped. Keep it up!

If I could also make a suggestion. x3 When working in dark/light areas, I learned in my art class, it's also great to work from light to dark instead of dark to light. It's a great way to keep your lights light and your darks to be dark. :]
I dunno if you know that but, thought I would point it out anyways. ^^ Great tut though, I enjoyed reading it. :]
