Description
Tutorial for painting a close-up of a Wolf (or any other furry creature).WARNING: large file. It might take a while before the tutorial shows up on your screen, so please, be patient. I was too lazy to add a preloader...
Use the buttons at the top of the tutorial to navigate through the slides. I have no idea why the text has turned out jagged and hard to read, so I apologise if you have difficulties reading it.
ARTIST'S COMMENTS
Thank you ever so much for my second DD ~AnimalLover345 and ^shelldevil !
EDIT: Due to popular demand I re-named the tutorial more appropriately "How to Paint a Wolf".
EDIT 2: Fixed all known spelling mistakes.
A tutorial I pulled together of my last Wolf piece. I don't know if it will be of help or use to anyone, but there's no harm in making one anyway! Please bear in mind that this is the first time I've drawn something this furry this close up, so I'm sure there are other ways of doing this too.
If you have any problems with viewing the tutorial or any questions or problems in general, please let me know. I'll be happy to help as much as I can
NOTE: The tutorial explains functions and options available in Adobe Photoshop CS2. Any older or newer version of Photoshop should still work just as well. I have no experience in any other digital editing program (such as GIMP or Corel Painter) so I have no idea to what extent you can follow the tutorial there. If anything, it might just give you an idea of how to draw similarly, but you will have to find out on your own I'm afraid.

It's another program yes, quite different from Photoshop but it belongs to the same company. It's the one that everyone uses to make animations, short films and little flash games in, and it's mostly suitable for a cartoony style with thick lines and cell shading etc. But great for animating things that you've drawn elsewhere. I'm sure you can get a free trial of it somewhere

Very interesting. I don't have Photoshop. I use GIMP. I found some tutorials for fur that I've been using lately and my drawings are getting better because of it. I should be able to apply some of these though.
Quick question though. How were you able to underlape the flat color under the line-art so well where you were at the point of just able to have just color? Actually I think I just thought of a way while writing this. But if you know any techniques I could use I would always use the advice. XD

I'm glad to hear that the tutorial was still useful to you even though it's for a different program Usually when I paint the flat colours I just, well, I paint it
No shortcuts, just plain brushing and cleaning up the edges afterwards
If you've got a very clean line-art, however, with no holes or intersecting lines, you can select the inside of the line-art with the magic wand. I can't remember quite where without looking in Photoshop myself, but there's a "Modify" option where you can "Grow/Expand" the selection by a certain amount of pixels. I usually do about 3-5px, and on a layer underneath the line-art, I fill in the selection with the paint bucket. Thanks to expanding the selection, you can get the edge of the flat colour to fit underneath the line-art perfectly, without creating that horrible jagged effect that you get if you paint bucket it straight away. It's good if you want to keep the line-art and avoid the time-consuming job of painting it all in

i have the opacity set to pen pressure. i know that's important. but what about the flow??? do you have that set on pen pressure or just set to off? cos i find that if i turn pen pressure on with flow it leaves visible round paint dots whenever i stroke on my intuos.

cerona In reply to iamthewizard2 [2011-07-08 14:49:06 +0000 UTC]
I keep both of mine turned on for pen pressure, but keep the "minimum" set to 0%. That should get rid of any dots that are visible

Awesome tutorial. the only thing is that I have a really old version of Photoshop (5.5) that doesn't have any airbrush flow options. Is there any way I can get the same sort of results?
π: 0 β©: 1
cerona In reply to EquusFlame [2011-07-03 12:15:47 +0000 UTC]
I don't think you need to use an actual airbrush to get the same results. As long as you have a tablet so that you can get the pressure option from that, and some sort of opacity or flow options added to it (ie the harder you press the pen, the stronger the line appears. If you press lightly, the line is very faint) it should be no problem

Unfortunately you have to pay yes.. There's a free version similar to Photoshop called GIMP that you can download and it does pretty much the same things
