Maybe because it's the first sketch with the first paint strokes, the instinct that speaks first?

I though the same. To be honest I prefer it to the actual end product!

Uhm, well I can't tell... I think they're two different styles, but surely in the first one her sight is much more intense, so in some way yes, you're right! :/

I like the second to last better than the final.

tsuaii In reply to Rotnik [2014-08-10 07:12:25 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you — the hair is too sharp! There's always something nice about less-defined, softer hair. That being said, everything else is quite crisp in the painting so I feel the hair is passable (if barely) from a technical standpoint.

The streaks were intended to be an unusual light source as I basically wanted to stuff as much into this painting as possible, for the sake of the tutorial. Might look a little cheesy but it turned out to be an important part of the video!

I understand, I do think it is a nice painting and it just comes down to personal preference. Thanks for the reply.

yamashta In reply to Rotnik [2014-08-08 19:56:18 +0000 UTC]

Her hair isn't detailed and she doesn't even have any eyelashes in that stage. Or wetness to her lips/eyes.

Rotnik In reply to yamashta [2014-08-09 09:00:30 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you're getting at, I just think it is better. The hair in the final is overdone and looks too sharp, second to last has more form and is subtle. Also, I don't know what the light streaks add to the painting, they just make it look cheap.

yamashta In reply to Rotnik [2014-08-09 19:48:46 +0000 UTC]

You don't seem to detail any of the hair you draw, so I guess that says something. The hair isn't too sharp, it's just. Hair. Because you know, theres hundreds upon thousands and probably even millions of hairs on an individual's head. *shrug*

As for the lighting I can see where you're coming from, but without the glowy things the lighting doesn't quite seem right? Given the glowy bit at her neck ( without it ) raises the question of 'where is the light source coming from?' because it's shadowed beneath the feathered shoulder piece and the light is seeping out between each feather, and the brightest point is literally at her neck, so something would need to be there ( hence the flying light thing )

same goes for the other glowy things. without them it raises the question of 'where is the light coming from' since it can't come from very many places given the placement of the lighting on the hair/body/etc

Rotnik In reply to yamashta [2014-08-09 23:34:43 +0000 UTC]

You don't need to call my art into question in this argument, I'm by no means a professional and I know my faults. Yes, there are millions of hairs on the head, but they do not act like millions of hairs, they follow the form of whatever they're on, and act more like ribbons than individual strands. shading each hair individually looks messy and is called spaghetti hair. This is by no means spaghetti hair, but the general idea is the same. Here, media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736… , this is a portrait by Ruan Jia, you see how subtle the hair is? Really beautiful and not overdone with thousands of highlighted strands.

On the lighting aspect, I understand why it's there, otherwise the shading would be strange, it's more from a compositional aspect, it is kind of lame to have there.
