Watch the Full Video Tutorial HERETutorial: Painting with Ambient OcclusionArtist: Jonathan Hamilton
Jonathan Hamilton - Here is an artist that has a unique look to his characters in which you are able to tell Jonathan created this one. It’s that personal style that many artists long for and his tutorial covers the foundations of the process to create something wonderful. He has a few step by steps on his site that I recommend checking out! He has a fantastic tutorial explaining AO, so check it out and read his tips on the steps along the way!
In his Citizen tutorial, he takes you through explaining AO and the importance it can add to a piece. As a Citizen member, you can also download the HD Video, His Brushes, and the Final .PSD!

This is obviously incredibly well done, but im a little confused. Did he render an AO or did he paint one in himself?
And if he painted it, does it still count as AO or just extra shading?

He painted the AO on the piece himself and then painting over that.

From the site:
It's painting. The render-like look is due to the emphasis on occlusion shadows.

Ahh thx. I've started learning a few 3D programs not too long ago, so I knew about AOs and their value. Was hoping there was some sort of option in like photoshop for them too lol

Well, I learned something new about shading with layers on steps 2&3. It almost looks like a flatly lighted 3D model. Also, I was confused at how the "initial sketch" even qualified as a sketch, but after looking at his Terra- Process, that's how Mr. Hamilton works!
