Description
I keep watch, far enough away to be invisible. But when I feel like some overstep their bounds, I approach...Because this thing is too darn complex, I want to show off the setup for it just to get a sense of how much stuff I worked with to get all the effects, from the reflections on the eyes (two isolated xaos loops, one for the brightness, one for some structure making it seem like the reflection had some depth), the the scales around the eye (a xaos loop of like 8 iterators), and the eye itself (one xaos loop). It took me three days to get the eye and shapes around it working, and the base itself was from a planet that looked surprisingly like an eye...so this was a bit more time-intensive than what I usually create these days!

It's interesting how the eye also resembles the moon. Gives the observer concept another dimension

That's actually an interesting observation
This eye was originally created when I was working on the "planets" and saw some type of "cat eye" in the colors. I spent three days transforming it from a planet/eye into a dragon eye with textures around the eye and reflections. I still consider the eye to show some type of "universe" or "nebula" in it

I look at it first glance and I think " man this Amber looks awesome, but what's that in the center? " then I look at it better and I see it's a giant dragon-like Eye

It looks better as an eye; my exploration with the colors led me to discover that the pupil could be removed and ... it doesn't look nearly as good

I'm really excited to see this from you, and I'm not surprised it is an extension of the planets. For a little while it seemed (to me, anyway) that your art was retreading ground, falling back on tried-and-true elements (ofc not always a bad thing, but I could endlessly about breadth vs. depth in fractal style). But I think the planets were definitely a new addition to your repertoire, and this just takes that further.
Anyway. Join us in the land of absurd numbers of transforms...

Thank you, I appreciate the insightful comment
I won't disagree that I wasn't covering very much new ground for quite a while, and will admit that all this crazy new stuff I'm finding possible with xaos loops to be a great, and much needed breath of fresh air that both helps me learn and challenges my own skills in a way that I wished I was able to do many months prior to this.
I don't think my artwork will ever be the same as it was now that I've learned this new stuff, but on the same token, I do see myself revisiting "the same old same old" stylistically, even if it might have different complexity to parts of it, since that's the kind of stuff I enjoy doing! I might try to do much more "structured" pieces, with more "elements" contributing to them, and while I'd love to make artwork like this frequently, it's often more about uncovering an interesting base that allows me to build on top of it than it is working with the details -- especially with these planets, or anything else!
Having said that, I want to try doing something dumb stupid with a gazillion linear transforms and links to see what type of raw scene I could build with that

Okay, I think I've considered entirely what I wish to say:
The division of coloration is near-to-perfect, with only a couple of details straying onto (or out of) the eye -- though may have been an included aspect of design. The texturing is what truly gives this piece detailing; the eye iris moves in from an outer ring of color to a bit of scratching, then transfers into an apparent depression of the yellow coloration. This is furthered by the outside green texturing, which seemingly mimics scales in its division, though does lose such an appearance towards the bottom right. Trickery of the light is the most impressive part of the fractal, however: the method in which you forged the dimensionalism of the eye is an unequivocally advanced technique, with only a minor qualm in how the pupil overreaches into the reflected light. Lighting is again applied at the rim of the iris at the top, where it serves to create a marking between the socket and the eye, as well as better establish the sense of reflection which was previously created upon the eye itself. I must also comment on your usage of depth in this; for it provides another means of illusion, altering the perspective of the viewer to focus on the eye as though it protrudes from the base.
Splendid work!

The details straying into the eye were a side effect of just the sheer number of transforms and how they work; locking them to the eye itself would have been nightmarish, and as I'm not super familiar with the crop family, I didn't really see if that could even do anything to fix this.
I kinda liked how the pupil reached into the reflected light, though realistically it isn't the most convincing effect. I think I ended up toning down the opacity on the background reflected layer so that the second reflect layer with a bit of darkness and shape could be visible, which in turn made the high opacity of the pupil bleed into it a bit too much.

Congratulations on the achievement of this piece. An incredible amalgamation of abstract texture and technical expertise. Amazingly realistic chatoyancy combined with insightful, accurate color work. The shapes are at once familiar and alien - the dragon's vertical-slit pupils are so iconic, yet the way the fibers and muscles of the iris are defined visually here suggestions the dragon is potentially also a being of energy. Interesting footnote: creatures with vertical-slit pupils have great depth perception, and this evolutionary advantage is often seen in ambush predators that have to be very good at judging distance as part of how they hunt.

I wonder how difficult it would be to turn something of that beauty into an animation...? Look at it! The only thing that could make it look more real is movement! xD

ChaosFissure In reply to ToothpasteThy [2016-04-20 19:07:40 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I'd prefer to make an actual full-bodied dragon from this than animate it, and it'd be significantly easier to do than making a realistic animation from this that has any substance.
This thing already has 20 iterators that'd need to work together (or in groups, which chaotica doesn't have) but I also know how the structure behaves and don't feel that it would actually allow for like....even blinking to work appropriately given how darn bright the reflections in the eye are relative to the scales and "face" around it.

Thank you very much I think it was worth the time as well, though most of the time was spent creating a script that would let me parse and recreate chaos files with xaos loops and things to make that process a bit faster XD

Hmmm i wonder if i should add some sort of "multiple loop fractals with abstract stuff" example to the IFS poo list just because

ChaosFissure In reply to tatasz [2016-04-20 18:39:31 +0000 UTC]
Well I was going to do a whole dragon face, but that kinda .... is too much until Chaotica's interface makes working with these types of "layers" much more simple (i.e. collapsible/sortable groups!). It's definitely very rewarding, but getting there can also be pretty frustrating because there's just so much stuff going on at once that it's hard to keep track of what stuff you actually see versus what you're clicking.
Abstract stuff can benefit from loops, so you're welcome to add it as an example if you so want!
