Description
I had a funny situation in the skirmish in which I did this. At some point in the middle of the game (it was a free-for-all with brutal AIs), I lost my Soviet Construction Yard to a Tanya that had been airlifted into my base (I don't really put up air defences unless someone will end up building Kirovs). almost as a bit of revenge, I took the offending player's MCV and built an allied addition to my base until I captured another Soviet MCV. I then did a What-the-Hell case of capturing the oil derricks in the center of the map (Bering Straits) and built a nice compact assembly of at least 10 war factories, 2 Grand Cannons, and countless SAM sites and pillboxes for added measure.I then took an hour ferrying apocalypse tanks from this outlet to the outer islands before launching the final assault. The entire skirmish took a little over three hours.

If you thought these Apocalypse Tanks were awesome, the Mental Omega 3.0 version will ramp that up to eleven. Mental Omega is basically THE best mod (and the only one still active in development after 10+ years after its release) for RA2 and YR.

That kind of Apocalypse tank division can turn 7 Brutal Army Bases into scraps for........
45 minutes..
depends on the map
as for that Allied Base... =

How I usually play RTS games is massive free-for-all with the hardest AI I can summon. Sadly, trying to do that in Starcraft 2 thus far has resulted in me considering getting a dedicated gaming computer with my next paycheque.

How did you build Grand Cannons if you were a Soviet?

Due to the nature of whatever mods happened to be installed, Grand Cannons were available to the Allies in general.

Whoever was the owner of that base must have been "totally happy"
The 1st thing that really surprised me was the length of the match. AFAIK the RA2 is pretty fast game. Eferything is destroyed in a matter of seconds if you use the right unit to do the job. That means if an enemy manages to get his army into your base (no matter if he defeated your defeses or bypassed them) you re pretty much done for.
Losing a construction yard (if you have only 1) during a full-scale attack is nearly always a death sentence. Even if you have both buildings to create an MCV, they re most probably gonna be destroyed as well. Not to mention the grim case when you are low on funds. So you have to be a totally l33t player to overcome this.
Sneaky attacks using Tanya really pisses me off. Thats why I always have sentry guns/pillboxes all over my base. They re cheap, and dont turn off when your power is low. I also often protect my CY with a wall.
I build a few AA defenses, or better AA units. It helps especially when Harriers are after your refinery (at least AI likes to do so) As for Kirovs, the best unit to deal with them is Aegis Cruiser - especially when it has top rank. Single elite Aegis is capable of downing an endless row of Kirows (if they dont come in a bunch of 50 at once). Just order it to attack manually and watch the show.

RA2 can be both a fast game and a long game, depending on how you play. In this case, and many others, I've simply opted to toy with the AI to sate my amusement. On the other hand I've also rushed nearby enemies with attack dogs and engineers near the start of the game, and then systematically destroyed my other enemies with sniper/mirage tank combos and/or prism tank/apocalypse tank combos afterwards.

Yeah, I know what U R talking about. I also enjoy toying with my enemies by using various infantry+IFV combinations. Did you know even Soviet infantry can use it? Also special units like Desolator (fires radiation) or Cuban terrorists (cheaper demolition truck)
There is also this random prism tank destruction I adore. Simply them level up to max. and then order them to attack units (not buildings, the beams wont cluster then). The best thing is to attack enemy harvester inside their base. BAM! All hell breaks loose.

Yeah, I've done both. In fact, the IFV combinations are outright stated and encouraged in the final mission of both the allied and soviet campaigns in Yuri's Revenge.

Yuri is a real bastard but using long-ranged units worked for me. Especially Prism tanks, because gattling units were rather quick to destroy all my missiles.
In the final soviet mission it also helped simply dropping nukes on the psycho beacons in both soviet and allied bases. Then they joined me and I sent mr. psychopath directly into T-REXs clutch

I remember one playthrough I did of that level where I only freed the soviet base. To my delight was the fact that said base already had a small Kirov airship fleet ready to go, so I used them to bomb Yuri to oblivion to this tune. [link]
It was magnificent.

Yeah, I remember doing the same as well. Eventually (come Yuri's Revenge), I just figured it would be more fun to play as the Koreans and establish airbases on small islands. No amount of air defence could stop a few squadrons of 12 Black Eagle jets each from turning AI-controlled bases into vegetables.

As of late, a lot of what I've been doing when it comes to gaming has either involved moving space-based fleets around (Sins of a Solar Empire) or spamming the mining industry with uranium and helium-3 for quick cash (Moon Tycoon).
I still play Red Alert 2 once in a while out of nostalgia, as it is the first C&C game I've ever played (followed shortly by Tiberium Sun). I always have fun with IFVs.
I've always liked the Battlefield series, although I would have liked to see more variance in the factions fighting over certain maps than continuously have Russians vs Americans in Battlefield 3 multiplayer.

I've kind of spoiled the plot-line for myself in a quick wiki search not too long ago. It's quite easy to tell who you're facing at the beginning - Iran banned the game.
Ever heard of the mod Project Reality?
