My biggest problem when it comes to doing cg is how my desktop shows the illustration im coloring bright and colorful. But on my laptop it looks much duller and thats usually how they end up when i get them printed for cons.
Do you hav any advice on that? <

Hey scotty6000! I have the same problem. This is what I do when I'm using my laptop and I don't have time to go to my desktop to do color corrections. I take a drawing that I know looks right, colorwise and I open it up in photoshop alongside my new drawing and match the color saturation and light values. presto!

Thanks for doing this; it was really helpful (especially the bit about styles, I've really been pondering that lately and you've helped me understand what actually makes one)

ya what exactly is that anti-alias stuff anyways i see it on Gimp too. I like to use Manga Studio to do the lineart too, but how do I make a page without the bleed and all that, so i can make a larger picture. When I transfer the lineart over to gimp it sometimes gets all messed up.

It ended up being mostly about drawing, and talks a bit about Manga Studio and Photoshop to
I might make a "part 2" with more screenshots and detailed explanations about Photoshop later.

I've seen a lot of these things, and really. a LOT. Hundreds fo' real
You don't tell people to draw in a spesific way but rather explain broad strokes in small details and you even encourage people to draw more rather then telling them too.

How do you do cell-shading, more specifically? I didn't fully understand it. I've read about it before and I didn't understand that either. Can you give me a really basic explanation on how to do it?
Also, I don't understand the dodge and burn tool. What exactly do they do? Because to me it just looks like it makes it darker or lighter, but couldn't I just paint a darker color and blend it and get the same effect?
I'm sorry, I'm kind of limited with Photoshop. >.>

Tazuna In reply to turqteischa [2010-12-15 00:04:58 +0000 UTC]
The burn and dodge tool is meant for photography and fixing up sketches. You see, sometimes the scanner "receives" a picture funny and even though you might see a spot as white, it doesn't mean there's no data there that can be darkened. It might not seem useful to you, but some people use the original sketch as lineart for digital paintings.
As for cell shading..it's basically the typical cartoon look. The person who did this tutorial used cell shading by doing a base color on the bottom layer, then making a new layer and block in the shading and highlights with the hard brush (not pixel).
