This is beautiful, and I didn't notice many english mistakes! Quick question: what do the burn and dodge tools DO? I'm just starting out on photoshop

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

Cheila In reply to Serena-Scarlet [2011-07-13 13:41:59 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank you!
They basically brighten and darken colors in a nice, simple and fast way. Try them with different settings over different colors and you'll start to understand

imsogreen In reply to Serena-Scarlet [2011-07-12 15:43:56 +0000 UTC]

I might have the two switched (been a while since I used PS) but if I recall correctly the burn tool darkens the area you're going over with your brush whereas the dodge tool makes it brighter.

Also, they each have 3 settings of: shadows, midtones and highlights. So, if the colour you're working on is very dark, then you'll get a stronger effect if you use the shadow setting, medium colours work best with the midtones and light colours do best with highlights.

I hope that helped a little

Very good text in the beginning.

Though I think the word "abstraction" is better than "distortion" but that's just a tiny detail.

Haha it's because I was watching K-ON at that time I don't have a defined style yet, so it changes with what I'm watching at the moment x_x;;
Thank you!!

Auggiekins [2011-07-12 09:06:21 +0000 UTC]

I do have a question!
About always starting with the head.
I've always heard from everyone that you NEED to start with the head, because it's the most important part, with the most focus and personality (not all, but most).
I used to start from other parts before, but whenever I did, I ended up with horrible proportions. Now I always start from the head, but a lot of the time I feel like it is always bigger in proportion to the body. Most of my drawings have the body re-sized after the sketch, so that when I lineart they are more well-proportioned (still not enough sometimes DX)

Can you go into the part about starting from other areas with more detail? :c

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Cheila In reply to Auggiekins [2011-10-12 17:41:14 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I took so long to notice your comment! x_x
The thing is, you shouldn't detail any part of the body until you have a simple sketch of the whole body with the proportions exactly as you want them. It might take some re-doing over and over, but at least you won't waste time with small details (like the eyes, fingers, hair, clothes, etc).
It might be easier if you start sketching in a place that has to do with the movement of the character, like the arm if it's holding a sword, or the butt if it's sitting in a chair. But the most important is really to just have the basics sketched up before you start with the details

Using no anti-alias is such a powerful method with colouring. It's tempting to keep it aliased, it has a very distinctive look I think.

How did you do the shadow with Layer Styles?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Ryouuu In reply to Cindyjess [2011-05-17 04:29:41 +0000 UTC]

Thats the drop-shadow. Right click the merged layer, then select blending options. Then go to drop shadow and adjust the settings as you like. :3

Thanks so much for the advice! "The world is not in your head - it's outside" - brilliant! And the thing with drawing eyes and head first happens to me alot! But whenever I try to start with the pose first, the face never really fits the head, or the head is too big or small for the body :/ I guess practise makes perfect! Thanks again!
