Description
Over the years I've been working on collecting crystal emeralds. So far I managed to obtain 5; Orange, blue, green, pink and grey/clear. Hopefully I will manage to obtain the remaining red and violet one soon. Then, who knows what will happen. Muhahah. >8DAhem, in any case, I decided to photograph them as a study and reference. You see, I've noticed that most of the games and much of the fan art fails to show the true beauty of these objects. It's not because people are lazy but it is because they are difficult to render both in 3d and especially in 2d. Emeralds are translucent and can be considered as prisms. As such, they should bend light and produce particular "refraction" patterns instead of the a single glow we commonly see. I'm hoping with the next gen consoles, they will manage to pull off the real effect. ^^
Even with a light source coming from within the emerald, it should create somewhat of a glitter effect around it. Each facet and joint splits and concentrates the light. It's quite a sight to see. =]

Something else I wish they'd do in the games, is keep a common color scheme. The color of them change in every game. it should just be the same scheme
But those are beautiful, your so lucky haha

If you take them all, then how will Shadow use the chaos control? And also, are you Doctor Eggman?

Very nice collection you have there. I envy you so much right now.
But I have to voice one fanboy issue with your thing about them refracting light and such. From what I know of the Chaos Emeralds, the glow you see isn't light shining through the gem, its the light from the chaos energy contained within the emerald that gives it its glow. Hence why when Chaos absorbed their power at the end of Sonic Adventure they all turned a dull grey and no longer had any glow to them at all.
But hey, that's just what I believe. Defintely don't take my word on that being canon or anything close to it.

Thanks for the comment, Niteshade. =] I understand what you mean and I've already addressed that aspect in greater detail in another deviation, if you would care to take a closer look: [link]
You will find that I go into how such an energy source would work as well as the visual effect it produces. Hopefully that meets your concern. Feel free to ask questions of course. *bows* ^^

Wow...I'll definitely give you props for being thorough in your research on emeralds and the specific "brilliant" cut that the games have used over the years as far as how light and even energy would work both inside and outside the gem. Very insightful. This is why I'm glad that fans of the earlier years stood the test of time into teen and even adulthood. We think the elements of the games through so much more in-depth than we did as kids, and get so much more out of it because of it.
Thanks for the referal to you deviation explaining all of this, I appreciate it greatly. ^_^

From some open markets in Manila, Philippines. My main source is a place ironically called "Greenhills". XD
Thanks for asking. =]

Really? heh heh, if the place is called Greenhills, then you either be sonic because your looking for emeralds, or eggman because you know so much about them.

Great visual example of the jewel render, yet I think you should display each of those jems seperately so that there own light won't interfere with each other colors.

Well, after a lot of haggling, I got most of the merchants to sell them to me for roughly $5 a piece even though all of them were (with the exception of one or two) real crystal. =3 It's always good to get them direct or close to the source ^^

I seriously need that time machine so I can have more time to draw! Hopefully this semester will be free enough so that I can finally get to it. I mean, it's sketched out and all. I just need to follow through with it already! XDD;

There is one game that got close, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. But yeah it would be nice to see a realistic emerald render in the future of games.

Ah is that so? I should check it out some time. I played Morrowind but I never finished. It's an awesome series though. =]
And yeah it seems that new new gen consoles (and pc cards) have the ability to pull off translucent objects and light shading. It's just a matter of implementing it now. *nods*

chemb0t In reply to goldhedgehog [2006-09-25 18:58:25 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. I hope to try to pull it off some time. From what I've picked up, it seems that painting or drawing translucent objects like these are like one of the more advanced challenges/tests an artist can do. Seems that one really needs to get a good understanding of how light behaves through objects and around it's surroundings .
Of course, the more reference the better so I might end up taking more pictures and posting them here =]
Yesh, two more and I can finally fly to class! *shot*
