Description Here's another sequential shot of the HDRI render I did. The first shot is without HDRI lighting, the second is with HDRI enabled, and the third is with both HDRI and simulated bloom.

For those of you not familiar, High Dynamic Range Imaging or HDRI for short, is the technique that allows an image to have a higher range of exposures compared to normal imaging techniques.

Essentially what it does is it allows one to see a wide range of lighting conditions for a particular scene, such as direct sunlight, shaded sunlight or even things like flourescent or incandescent lighting. This HDRI image can then be brought into a 3d program such as 3ds max and used as an 'environment map' to be used for reflections and lighting, giving a rendered object a much more realistic look.

The software actually analyzes the image in the HDRI set and uses the varying intensity as light sources to light the scene. For example, a blue sky or white sun would be counted as high points (in terms of luminosity/brightness) and then be used almost as area or point lights to be projected onto the object, which if reflective, would show up as an image.

The ending effect is that the rendered object would be lighted just as if it were a real object in the captured HDRI image/environment. This technique is widely used in movies, such as when they blend both real shots and CG characters into one scene. =]

The ones I used were from books I got from the library, but you should be able to find a decent run-through by looking around on Youtube. Here's one I spotted: [link]

Simply Amazing. I was considering getting into some 3D art myself, and this is most definatly a work of much effort. Its quite amzing how realistic graphics are getting these days^^. Keep it up Dack!

the first frame is my personal favorite o3o I like the feel of the white parts on GEM in that lighting method.
The second is definetly much more realistic, and I can see it edited to be floating around next to you XD Maybe next semester? *shot*

hmmm so this HDRI, its the thing they used in films like Transformers right? So what exactly is it, is it like an extra bit of software or something that you learn to make like um....coding?

Yep, it was used quite extensively in Transformers to get the characters to blend into the shot. =] HDRI isn't an external software, it's just a special layered image format that's used for environment mapping. Instead of .jpg I think it's .hdr. I have yet to test it myself but I believe you can make them by simply taking a panorama shot, or even just a photo of an environment and then saving it as that format.

I'm sure there are some software out there that make it easier to do but I think photoshop has the ability to save it too. =]

Oh man this looks very cool with lot of touching on your models. Too bad I don't really have a HD graphics card since the HD graphics card I got for Christmas didn't have driver support. So yeah, the driver support is a lie.

So let me ask something....HDRI is a separate program for JPEG images? These render shots look BEAUTIFUL.

Very realistic, Chem! It looks real enough to touch ^o^

I hope to see more works like this from you. You render 3D approaches very well!
