Since a few friends of mine thought this was useful, I've decided to post it up on dA :'DDDon't mind the messiness, and this may not be 100% accurate but it's how I choose my own colours.
Be daring to experiment with different bases, shades and highlights.

Well, for browns/tans, I stir towards using red-purple or blue-purple. The choice depends on the suitability of the shade, you can try to experiment with both and choose the final shade colour later.
Grays is very variable actually o v o You can go for a darker shade of gray with almost any hue; blue, purple and green are my usual picks, but you can always go for red/yellow/pink too. Again, it depends on your taste.

I always see artists use bright vibrant colors to shade boring ones and make amazing effects, but I've never been adventurous enough to try it myself. But I want the look it gives, so I'm gonna try it out!

I had already used the shade by dragging downwards, but i have never tried changing the base colour itself

I totally stopped shading in black eight months ago. Now I shade everything with blue
