Description About the idea
I made this drawing of Luna, because my mom kept saying I should make a portrait of one of our cats.

About this drawing
I decided to do it on black paper because:
1. I wanted to try it.
2. I didn’t have to draw her whole fur.

I drew her from a photo, which was very hard… it took me more than half an hour, and a lot of patience to make a suited photo to make this drawing.

About Luna
I got Luna on my birthday 11 July 2007, after an awful lot of begging. I wanted a completely black or an completely white cat. I have had a white cat, Yuki… but he died in a car-accident. So Luna was supposed to be a bit of substitute for Yuki. Too bad for me… Luna isn’t much like Yuki.

On my birthday I was bored, and where searching on the internet, so I found an advertise for kittens, they had even a black kitten, and best of all, they live in the same village as I do. So I convinced mom that we should go buy it. She was a bit troublesome when she first got in our home. She couldn’t stand open spaces. ( a bit an opposite of Claustrophobia) when we took her out the cage in which we transported her… she just snapped… she started panicking, running, and jumping against the walls, and after a few minutes, we had to get her from behind the heating system. So we locked her up in the bathroom, with some food, water and the cage in which we transported her, so she had something sleep in.

That evening I also found out the cat I had bought was a “she”… I forgot to ask it when I bought her… I would have liked a male cat better, because they are usually a bit more friendly and level-headed, although I probably would have still taken her, even if I would have know it was a “she”… just because it REALLY wanted a new kitten.
The first two nights she has meowed very long… it sounded like she was crying… it was heartbreaking! Especially since I have calculated, Luna is about 5 or 6 years old in human years. (She is about 10 weeks old) A pretty long time, Luna have lived mostly in the living room. We had also putted a big rabbit cage in the living room, we locked her up every evening in the rabbit cage, and put a blanket on the cage, first we had the blanket completely covering the cage, but we took it off more and more, until she was sleeping without it.
I think Luna liked sleeping in the cage, she doesn’t cry anymore at night, I think she felt safe in a small space.
She also really sweet and loves to cuddle. We have bathed her to, because she had fleas. She was unbelievable… most cats freak out when you bath them… but Luna stayed pretty calm, she was also very relaxed when I wrapped a towel around her, to dry her fur. She also had a pretty long time, that when she heard my alarm clock in the morning she would go sit in the hall, and wait till I came downstairs. These days she just waits in the chair I’m usually sitting in when I drink my juice and take my medicines. And she hates to be alone. It isn’t as worse as it was, but first when she was in my bedroom with me, and I would leave to get something to drink or to got to the toilet or something like that, she would start crying so I usually said: “Sound like a left the baby alone again”

Really she is the weirdest cat we ever had, some odd thinks:
- She didn’t mind bathing.
- She couldn’t stand open spaces
- I had to baby-sit her, as long as I was in the same room, she was fine
- She loves my bathrobe, it’s a thick, red, soft one… and she usually starts sucking on it, like she is drinking.
- She only want to be picked up from certain places, so when you wanted to pick her up, you call her name… she runs to the chair in the kitchen or the old-paper-box, and jumps in/on it, and there she waits excited till you pick her up.
- She can sometimes walk around sniffing with her nose on the ground like a dog.
- She does pretty much things that remind us of a dogs, so sometimes we call her “Fikkie” which is a common dogs name in Dutch, and she listens to that as well.

The opposite of Claustrophobia (A fear of closed, small spaces) is Agoraphobia (A fear of open, large spaces). I know this since I have the first and a friend have the second.

She's cute, as for the open spaces things, cats generally do that when they feel uncomfortable in new places. Cats also tend to lik things that smell like their Favorite person, which seems to be you ^_^

I'm glad she got over it over time, she became more and more relaxed over time, lately she even purred out loud.

( Such a shame she's gone, we don't know what happened, but we haven't seen her for two weeks, and since she always came home every night, and always slept indoors, we're pretty sure something must have happened to her. )

two things. kidnapped, or dog or car victim. My cat was gone for two weeks but came back super skinny cause some kid kidnapped him.

A dog might be possible to, I don't see Luna getting kidnapped, she was very sweet but also incredibly nervous and shy, even I had trouble picking her up.

The problem is pretty close to our home there are "Allotment gardens" ( I believe that's the right word ) and off course those people usually don't like cats, which is why mom things Luna might be poisoned.

There could also be the possibilitty of an antu-freeze poisioning. To cats anti-freeze tastes really sweet.

I think this is really cool, the way you chose the black paper. I like the way the head turned out, but I think they rest could do with more... fur. XD I myself am no expert on cat-drawing, but I do think it's rather nice~ ;3 Go~

Thank you

It was a bit difficult indeed, but I have had an school assignment to make a drawing on blackpaper once before, so I remembered a bit how it worked.

Normally you usualy use your source of light, to make shadows, but on black paper you don't make shadows, you draw the highlights. So for me it felt a bit like I had to "shade" the other way round.

I think this portrait of Luna looks good on black paper, since her fur is also black. I think it's funny that she doesn't like being alone in a room.

Thank you very much for the compliments.

Well one of the funny things about that especially the first weeks, Luna also had to stay in the living room, so I could watch TV whole day, while saying that I just had to make sure Luna wasn't lonely.

Wow I am so happy you got a new kittie. Here is a cool trick put a clicking dlock in the same room as her and put a radio in the rooms you leave her in or a tv. leave it on and she wont feel as alone. BTW she is so beautiful

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chibi-Sugar In reply to TreLore [2008-02-15 07:38:18 +0000 UTC]

Maybe it would have been a good idea indeed, to put the TV or radio on to make her feel like she isn’t alone. But does a clicking clock work to? I always thought they usually like voices so it feels like there are humans around.

And thank you for the compliment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TreLore In reply to Chibi-Sugar [2008-02-15 08:19:23 +0000 UTC]

Well the clock serves as back ground noise and has a soothing effect on some animals. The radio or tv makes her think shes not alone. so your right Your very welcome Most cats freak out in large rooms at first and need to be given time to get use to them. When I first got my cats I lived in a small trailer, When I first moved to my house they freaked out at all the space. But after a week or so they grew use to it and were soon playing and having fun. But I didnt put them in a room. But I did just give them a lot of love. I let them alone and they found hiding spots. It was 3 days before priss came out of her hiding spot and it was a week for Tineous

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chibi-Sugar In reply to TreLore [2008-04-09 09:48:40 +0000 UTC]

Well the hiding sounds familiar to me as well

When we let Luna alone in the living room, it usually took us at least 10 minutes to find her back, and then again 10 minutes to get her out her hiding spot. (She managed to get in such crowded places that it looked unhealthy)

But now she is fine… a bit odd… but fine.

I’m very sorry for the late response.

TreLore In reply to Chibi-Sugar [2008-04-09 13:59:35 +0000 UTC]

I never did that. I learned a long time ago to let cats come out when they were comfortable. I left them alone, but I would find them and would not pull them out. I would though reach out and pet them and let them know I was there. Its OK i am just glad your OK

Hehe, I used to have a female cat named Luna.
Same colors, too.
But we had to give her away since she never came home [even after being fixed] and had an awful personality.

Haha, reminds me of when I bought her. I had only gone a month, the first time in my life without a cat..and I couldn't do it. So, I really bought her on impulse XD

And from what I've learned, that's not the best thing to do..because you don't necessarily 'click' with the cats personality..

That's amazing how she let you bathe her. I've had so many cats in my lifetime and I've yet to meet a cat that doesn't mind baths.

Haha,
Oh, and your piece.
The eyes aren't completely level..Ideally, a bit more level.
I would've loved more fur on the nose. [I donno why XD]

But all in all, it's a lovely piece
Awesome job :].
Haha, and I get how tedious is can be to draw fur.
I drew a piece of a cat about a year ago..and it was long XD

Thank you very much for this helpful comment.

I must say, I have really learned too, I shouldn’t bough cat’s on impulse. And as far as I have seen that other cat’s, there was one it clicked with… well I only saw him/her, but I immediately thought, that one seems really nice.

And now I look at it, your right about the eyes… drawing them in a good position was one of the most difficult parts, usually it can make or break a portrait.

And maybe the nose is a bit to plain indeed.

I tend to draw them and redraw them..and redraw them XD

Hah, but all and all, very lovely picture :]

And thanks for the watch~

i absolutely love it..again it looks so real...wish i could make something like that...and yeah she does seem liek a bady like you explain it...you know Bengal cats do the same thing, swim in baths and do dog-like tricks...i want one of those...their pretty and cute X3 X3 X3

Chibi-Sugar In reply to sifie14 [2008-02-15 06:42:05 +0000 UTC]

Well why don't you try making a portait like this?

When I finished it, I was amazed too, I didn't even know I could draw something like that.

Also working on black paper works pretty different, I once had to make a drawing on black paper at school. Normally you usualy use your source of light, to make shadows, but on black paper you don't make shadows, you draw the highlights.

Bengal cats... aren't that those cat's who are spotted, instead of striped?
