Glittering in the bright spring sunlight, cool ocean waves rolled lazily outwards, embracing the warm sands of the beach before pulling almost grudgingly back. Little crabs skittered across the wet shore, rushing for the safety of the waves with each push and pull of the water; and seagulls drifted like living kits in the air, their warbling song rising and falling in cadence with the undulating sea below.

A soothing breeze brushed through the palm trees that lined the beach. It tugged lightly at one particular overarching palm's leaves, causing the shadows it cast to rock gently around two exorcists resting beneath it.

Shiroyama Rei, smiled. She was enjoying the sound of the wind, the warmth of the sunlight, the soothing chill of the shadows... Humming quietly in content, she allowed her head to fall against her comrade's shoulder. Said comrade opened a narrowed, navy blue eye to glance down at her.

Kanda Yuu took in how Rei comfortably rested against his side, flecks of sunlight dancing across her long, warm brown hair and sandy exorcist uniform, and he noted the pleased and peaceful expression on her face. His lips quirked briefly, the hint of a smirk visible just before it disappeared. The Second Exorcist then turned his keen gaze out over the beach, taking in the ocean, the sky, the sands-- and checked for any new signs of Akuma.

He found none.

Kanda refocused once again on the landscape, taking it in for what it was rather than what it could hide; and he felt an inkling sense of déjà vu. He realized this was a sight that his master, General Tiedoll, would certainly appreciate. Kanda could almost hear the soft rasp of a paintbrush against canvas... the light strumming of Marie's strings... the bothersome crowing of Daisya as he played ball with noisy children somewhere off in the distance.

Kanda's eyebrow twitched at that last one, and he closed his eyes in annoyance.

Stupid Daisya, getting himself killed.

Rei suddenly shifted, jostling Kanda out of his darkening thoughts. He glanced down at the younger exorcist for a moment, then he moved his legs a bit - one knee bent - and leaned more fully against the palm tree at his back. Rei "hmm"ed sleepily, seemingly more comfortable now. The golem under Kanda's collar was far more vocal about his movement, twittering in complaint, but it quieted down soon enough. Satisfied, Kanda gripped Mugen with his free hand and propped the sheathed katana against his free shoulder.

The blanket of calm fell around them once again, the ocean waves a lulling, thrumming sound in the background. Kanda felt more than heard Rei's breathing even out, becoming slow and deep. The silly woman had fallen asleep. He had half the mind to wake her, insist they'd wasted enough time here and should return to the hotel for further mission instructions, but one look at Rei's face had Kanda sighing and settling back again.

He had his golem. If the Order needed to reach them, it could.

Dozing on a mission, though... Kanda remembered a time he'd smacked Daisya upside the head with Mugen's sheath for doing such a thing. At least Rei didn't snore like Daisya had, or Master for that matter. Her presence was more calming and comfortable - when she wasn't being clever with him, anyway. Being around Rei in times like these was like being around Marie, really, although Kanda didn't find himself appreciating Marie's looks as he did Rei's. It was unexpected, but he liked looking at her. Liked the feeling of her against him. She was... soft. And warm.

Rei's sleepy smile grew as she felt the lightest brush of lips against her hair, and even more so as the larger, calloused hand holding hers tightened just ever so slightly.

Behind the two resting exorcists, deep within a denser cluster of palm trees, the smoking carcasses of a dozen unholy killing machines finally collapsed into dust. The pentacles that marred the surrounding area would soon follow as well, their evil poison dulling and fading with time. Before long there would be no sign that a battle had ever occurred there at all. Even the memory of it would disappear from the exorcist's minds - but not, perhaps, the memory of sitting beneath a palm tree, resting comfortably against one another, and enjoying a blessed moment of rare peace in the chaos of their lives.

As they boarded the train for the long journey back to the Black Order the following morning, Rei went on her tip toes to peck her comrade on the cheek. Kanda arched an eyebrow at her, but she only smiled back up at him prettily, chocolate brown eyes as warm as the sands on the beach the previous day.

"I'm happy we had this mission together, Kanda."

Kanda stared at the young woman, then "hn"ed. Without another word, he opened the door to their train compartment, holding it open.

But Shiroyama Rei understood the language of Kanda Yuu. Her smile brightened at his unspoken agreement - at which point Kanda looked away with a scowl in an effort to hide his burning cheeks.

His eyes widened when a dainty hand grabbed him by the collar and tugged him downwards.

I enjoy spending time with you, too.
    So don't fade away - don't disappear -
    For I'm beginning to think,
that I wouldn't know what to do,
    without you.

Oh my, oh my, two Chii written works and Yuurei fic in one day? Am I in heaven? Or maybe it's the end of the world o.O

The beginning felt kind slow, but as I read on, the pacing soon smoothened out to become a very enjoyable read as per usual~
I love how romantically fitting this was without making it overbearing in anyways, as well as even including description of the akuma's carcasses, intermingling it into the whole scenery without it being forced as well as very DGMish...even adding a shade deeper to the whole romantic atmosphere! So I deeply applaud you for that ^^

The ending paragraphs definitely left smirking like a no good devilish fool tho huehuehue~ So thanks for the treat! Even though she already read them, I'm sure Rei'd adore it all over again!

//CACKLES// could've been three, if I uploaded her actual present yesterday xD

FOR SURE. I wanted to try something new, since I so often start fics with dialogue or an action rather than setting up a scene, but daaaamn I hate how slow doing settings at the beginning is xD Really this entire fic was an exercise in slower pacing, relying more on descriptive language to keep interest (going along with it being more romance-themed), but ugh, it's such a niche reading and writing preference LOL. I'm glad it wasn't overbearing, because that's def the main thing I worry about with these kinds of writing xD

Thank you so much, Suki!! I super appreciate these writing critiques you've been giving me, this is the shit I love to get

Oh lordy, I don't think I could've survived it if that were the case

It's always good to try new things, albeit them turning ot bad sometimes, however in some others, you could discover a new hidden talent! Though I'm sorry to say, I enjoy your usual writing better. I know you wanted to try and be more romantic by starting out with the scenery discription, but I guess that just ain't your style. I'm not saying you can't do that, but you can attempt to intermingle both styles together, in a way that's your usual engaging style but still slowly descriptive if I'm making any sense XD
Though like you said, this is more centered towards a particular writing and reading preference >.>

Haha, I'm glad then ^^ I actually like giving critiques instead of just plain fangirling all the time, but most of the time I try to, people say they don't like being critiqued or that I hurt their feelings in a way so that dejected me from attempting anymore. However, you're one of the few peeps I know who readily accepts them so I can pour my heart out in these without worry. So thank YOU dear <333

Never apologize for a mentioned personal preference when you critique me, Suki; even if I were to disagree, I'm glad you're honest with me <33

HMMMM I think I'll definitely try the intermingling, trying to find a good balance *v*

Yeeeeh, that happens a lot on dA, too. I understand some folks don't like to get critiqued because they already get enough of it offline in other areas of their life and/or just want to do a thing without having that thing judged or picked at (even if judged with good intent); or they've had past bad experiences and find critique, even when helpful, demotivating rather than motivating. Generally, I try to look into the artist before I critique them (to see if they respond well to it), or just straight-up ask if they're open for constructive criticism; this way it's easier to avoid unintentionally demotivating or hurting someone! c;

Suki, you've always critiqued my work with honesty and thoughtfulness, without being overbearing or restrictive. When you give your opinion, I know that you're saying "this is how I see it, but it's okay if you disagree!" and I respect that respect which you give me
