Description
Some people have asked me questions like 'can you teach me how to colour the way you do, or do you have any tips about colouring/shading in general', and while I'm not exactly learned enough to give proper advice, I can certainly do a step-by-step explaining the way I colour using the most basic tools and techniques available.Done in Sai with default brushes. Well, the bar 1 em setting is custom, but you're probably going to get the same effect using Flat Rough or some other similar flat brush.
The important thing is to know how to use the dropper tool to ease into colours nicely and paint using flat shading efficiently before attempting any blending, and of course, having an understanding of the way light falls over objetcts. If you're having trouble with shadows, I suggest practicing with simplistic shapes and objects.
also, I'm lazy so I constantly flatten and work over my layers to avoid having to juggle them. If you have the patience to manage multiple layers for a neater lineart/more manageable shading then go right ahead, but I find that painting over the top of everything works best for me. (I keep backgrounds separate from character images of course, and things like effects and ambiant lighting on their own layers)

I think it means you just combine the two separate layers together into one

Just wondering, what do you do when you paint over the yukky black lines. Just use a solid brush or something?

Um yo I'm curious about the part of painting over the library I normally use the ink pen. Like what do you do in the 3rd and 5th panels?
Like i understand I'm suppose to go over the lines but they still kinda show in the middle of the overall stroke over?

Thankyou! this was both simple enough yet detailed enough
I've dug through literally hundreds of lessons and tutorials, but I think this might be the one that actually makes it click!

GAH! =w= I come back to this too much. My brushes never seem to look the same as yours, but maybe that's just me. I did come close I think with aΒ style test Β but when I tried applying that to a full piece it didn't end up quiiiite the same.Β [Link] Β xP
Oh well, I'll keep trying! The tutorial has been a great help!

of course! That's the whole point of a tutorial like this. Feel free to figure out what works for you and what doesn't.

is the bar 1 em setting easy to make?
Anyways, I like the idea of painting out a palate, do you do that on a different layer or just right there on the layer you're working on?

It shows in the process that I make a new layer for coulouring underneath stuff, but then I flatten it and do it all on the same layer as necessary. Of course I keep things like characters and backgrounds separated but for simplicity I prefer to do all my painting on the same layer.
As for the bar setting, it's just a simple flat line brush I believe. a small filled rectangle.

sadly not, the blending and outline tweaking requires some kind of pressure sensitivity. Without it you're going to end up with very hard, jagged corners.

I love seeing how other artists work.
I wish I was good enough with Sai's brushes to paint on so few layers.
I usually end up with so many layers that I have to put them in groups.
And even then it's still a mess, lol.

ChillySunDance In reply to EmilieFox [2013-07-09 04:44:09 +0000 UTC]
I used to use a LOT of layers. there's actually nothing wrong with using lots of layers, but I found that personally it was causing me to lose out on a lot of completion time when I had to sift through tons of layers just to find what I wanted to edit. So nowadays I prefer to keep them to a minimum and simply paint over mistakes directly.
