Description The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 5 (Sharpening the Sword)

Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.

Now this undoubtedly is the most boring part of swordmaking EVER. Sometimes I dont even bother making a sword do you know why? becuase I have to go through the process of sharpening the sword which takes hours. Basically in this tutorial you are taught that you need to round the handles and sharpen the blade all with the use of some files. Yes with files you have to regioursly sand away the wood until its a hair strand thick blade edge. You also have to make sure the blade and handles are as smooth as possible, becuase when you add the paint the sword overall has to look as clean as possible. I hate this part of swordmaking yet its the largest part.

Thank you for posting these^^ they're very helpful.. even thou making a sword and making the making as a tutorial must take hours, it's still very kind of you and even thou this part is the hardest, it's still worth to do well.... I myself hate zigzagin the edges of the parts of a cloth, takes time and efford, but it must be done and well or the cloth will look awful in the end...

Damn... so much text again T.T.... but anyways: THANK YOU!!

another great tutorial

¬¬ did you get those files from wilkinsons? i think i have them too. anyway i've nearly finished cutting out my tsuba, i had trouble getting my saw close enough and i was afraid parts would snap off so i've resorted to filing away the rest. hence i know what those files look like very well nearly done though with the filing

as expected XD

I did indeed get these files from wilkinsons I mean they come in a pack of 3 and professional files cost £10 each?!! I buy all my tools from poundland and wilkinsons XD. Indeed if you are afraid of cutting too much out of the tubsa then theres no turning back, so just gradually sanding away the wood with the file is better instead ^^

^^ i knew it. i got most of my stuff from wilkonsons, its cheap and easy to get hold of ¬¬ though they did ask for my age, good job i have a driving license XD

well i'm also worried because i'm using hardwood not mdf, that it might snap along the grain ¬¬ i've already had that problem but i was able to sort it out

I have to say that I appreciate you posting these tutorials. I've applied some of the essential mechanics of the process to a few scenes in a book I'm writing.
