Description The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 5 (Sharpening the Sword)

Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.

Now this undoubtedly is the most boring part of swordmaking EVER. Sometimes I dont even bother making a sword do you know why? becuase I have to go through the process of sharpening the sword which takes hours. Basically in this tutorial you are taught that you need to round the handles and sharpen the blade all with the use of some files. Yes with files you have to regioursly sand away the wood until its a hair strand thick blade edge. You also have to make sure the blade and handles are as smooth as possible, becuase when you add the paint the sword overall has to look as clean as possible. I hate this part of swordmaking yet its the largest part.

Here is one tip that will ensure the blade edge is uniform along the length of the blade, and is cheap and EASY:

Mark off the area you will be filing with some tape, this will prevent you from over grinding into the flat area of the blade as well as helping you to see exactly where more filing is needed ;D

HeavyBenny In reply to chioky [2010-09-02 11:17:06 +0000 UTC]

Of course, I clean it regularly. Mainly when sanding, lots of dust everywhere! Btw, sanding is done, spent lots of time with it. I must admit, I started out with and electric tool, but then finished off with some old school hand work. Im quite happy with it, it corrected most of the bumps and imperfections from the cut
Ill be posting some pics soon, in case you are interested

What about using a hand plane or draw knife? That might allow you to take off more wood quickly and yet still have some control. Even if you just started that way, I guess, and then finished with a file.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chioky In reply to Tobias-lockhart [2009-09-23 21:59:12 +0000 UTC]

I found an even better way by making your own hand files lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tobias-lockhart In reply to chioky [2009-09-24 02:55:31 +0000 UTC]

oh really? cool! I just wondered since the problem with files is that they clog (as I think you mentioned) because they're really only meant for metal (or other hard materials) But then again, if it works then why not I say Very small tooth rasps would be another option too for initial roughing out of the shape I suppose, but perhaps that's kinda what your files are like anyway?

XDD

Seeing as I'm using your tutorials... your tsuba designs... It would be rather ungrateful of me /not/ to post it.

: )

MasterHarper [2008-07-04 01:31:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the lure of the easy part might make me rush my sharpening.

x.x

If I could sharpen it, seeing as my blade, as of an hour ago, snapped in half.

If only I could get my hands on wood that isn't crap, I'd be set.

'Cause I'm stuck using plywood, and it's the joins that are killing me.

Do you have to specially order the 40 inch strip pine? I didn't think you could get it that long and thin...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chioky In reply to MasterHarper [2008-07-04 07:13:15 +0000 UTC]

lol strip pine comes in about 100 inches 8D

*shoots self*

This is the part I'm at. It's so... ugh, I have no words for how much I now dislike the sanding.

x.x

And I've only rounded the handles. Which still took me three hours. I haven't even started on the blade...

*dies*

I might actually use this tutorial, Mr. C. I'm making the base of a sword out of a meter stick, and I needed to know how to make the edge, and here it is! I'm making unreleased Sode no Shirayuki for my friend's birthday, which is on Tuesday, so expect it done in 2 days or 3.

a bit of information you may or maynot know.

Within the sword restoration industry there is an item called a Tsunagi - which is a wooden blade and its carved to match a real blade, this is so when a person has a set of fittings that they are not using, they have a way of holding the fittings to gether & preventing the saya from warping

they generaly sell for about $45 usd for a cheap one.. a very specialist item.
might make you some money if you can get into it.

peace and good work.
keep it up.

FoxKids1302 [2008-03-16 15:55:33 +0000 UTC]

Since it's a wood , sword, I think you should sharpen the back side of the blade, and also encircle the handle. It'll look more like a real sword that way (just a suggestion, I'm no professional in this sort or things)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chioky In reply to FoxKids1302 [2008-03-16 16:08:15 +0000 UTC]

you do not sharpen the back of the blade lol the correct word is you round the back side of the blade which I have mentioned. As also I have already said you need to round the sides of the individual handles becuase without actually attaching it to the tang you cannot encircle the entire handles becuase the individual handles can only round too there base point.
