Description Snow leopard
20" x 25" / 50 x 65 cm
Chalk pastels
25 hours

This drawing was quite a challenge. Partly because of the format - it's the biggest I've ever drawn before - and partly because I gave myself a deadline of only a week as I didn't want to go back to spending months on a piece, I ltend to lose interest in it after a while when I do that - but mainly because I haven't actually drawn or painted at all in over a year. This is also the first big cat I've tried my hands on, AND my third pastel ever - my first with chalk pastels! All in all, I'm very happy about the outcome. It's no masterpiece but it's probably the best drawing I've ever done. I'll most likely update this deviation once I get a better photo of it.

(HEY! Can you find my signature? It's 'hidden' somewhere in the painting)

Now that's really nice. Well done! Amazing that you could do it in a week. I normally need a weeks rest from my work once I've spent a couple of hours on it!

This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pastel works I've ever seen. The level of realism is incredible, for both the rocks and the leopard.

The pic amazing! Even more cause of the media. I think calk pastels arenΒ΄t easy to handle... IΒ΄m more the one using paint.
So: WOW!!!

I have a question (which is usually popping up in my mind when I see such detailed natural done artwork): Did you used a photo as reference? And if where you got it from?

(Ahh... and I found your signature! Very well hidden. )

And you just used chalk pastels and velours paper? I really should try that too, because this result is as close to photographic realism as you can get.

i vote that you do a chalk pastel tutorial !! i cant seem to get the knack of them.... i have one pastel drawing that looks "decent"... but its of a canyon.... so it was hard to screw up... no fine detail like ... fur ... and eyes.....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chipset In reply to Dogote [2006-04-09 22:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't think there's any idea I put up a tutorial as I haven't really got much of a clue on what I'm doing (this is my 3rd pastel), BUT I could post a couple of WIPs of my next drawing. I'm working on it now and it should be finished the upcoming week. I'll put the wips in scraps.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dogote In reply to chipset [2006-04-10 03:16:04 +0000 UTC]

that would be awesome, and i dunno, it doesnt have to be one of those official profesional tutorials, just a "this is how i do it" tutorial... which is pretty much what the wip would be. i just have to see how you do it... i mean i have had the same chalk pastels for about 12 years, which is a long time to practice with something, and i'm only just now getting a feel for them...
i just dont see how you get those minute fine details and colour blends... my pastels are like sidewalk chalk lol

looks like a masterpiece to me especially the size of it and all the detail it looks absolutly great and I bet way better in real because photography is cool but it doesnt mix with drawings and paintings

Thanks for the comment, and yeah, photography and drawings/paintings sure doesn't mix! Wish I had a reaaaally large scanner.

hahaha a real huge scanner would be cool indeed but even then it wouldnt be the same.. most paintings and drawings are soo much better if you see them with your own eyes
