Description Edit: I wasn't happy with the face, so I did a repaint. Also, here is the song that goes with this - [link]

Honestly, I've never really gotten into the whole anime/manga fandom thing, mainly for my aversion to anything *gasp* popular. But, =Danny-Paint showed me this series this past week, and I admit, it's good. The themes are captivating and the characters relatable. I do think I am getting to the point where I can appreciate things like this again without being distracted by the fantasy element or taken away from what is truly important in life.

Anyway, it's a waltz between Edward Elric and Rose of "Fullmetal Alchemist" -- not for sake of "pairing" -- just a scene late in the series that was visually poetic and inspiring, and I needed to let loose on some art. His coat isn't in the original scene; I just added it for the color and extra flair! I should also note that I don't draw anime -- not for any other reason than I simply can't. That's why this is what it is. As a comic side note, Edward was originally taller in this picture. I then discovered that he was, erm, shorter than Rose, and attempted to adjust as much. lol.

There's an eerie tune that is part of the OST and the scene from which this is taken, and it is the namesake of this art. It goes particularly well with the picture if you can find it, but it requires a little attention to some background detail here!

I like the way you handled this by making his face realistic yet simplified and not a classic style anime.

I always discourage people from drawing manga style before developing some skills to handle it. And badly drawn anime is always an epic fail.

proportions are a bit off, but the composition is balanced enough to save the overall look. The best part is the background - it's simple enough to not distract from the first plane. And you know where the scene is taking place. It does it's job well.

Lolz, there is a lady stalking in the back!

Thanks

The truth is, I'm not a classic anime artist (I feel so unique on dA! lol.) Really, I'm not much of an anime artist at all. And I totally know where you're coming from, because when I first started attempting to draw people, I tried to do anime. I was terrible at it, and it showed. (Here are some examples just for you: [link] , [link] , [link] ) Anyway, I finally got an art teacher in High School who set me straight. She had a thing against Anime that probably went a bit far, but nevertheless, she really encouraged me to develop a real appreciation for the real thing. Thus, my characters "evolved" -- The first example, Chrish, became [link] , Lupus (the redhead) became [link] , and Pardalis (the blonde) became [link] ... Not perfect, still a bit stylized -- but they're all a sight better!

I think there are some who would suppose that my current style is even a form of Anime. I have no idea, I know there is anime that looks something like it. But it's definitely not what I intend. Even still, I have been experimenting with it for fun lately, and it's not NEARLY as bad as it once was!

Anyway, thanks again -- this is really helpful! To be honest, This piece bothers me and still does. I succeeded, but just barely, at executing my mental image, and it was one of those frusterating pieces where, no matter how much.

In my defense, I did it when I was JUST getting back into my artistic inspiration. It's kind of like loading up an old print cartridge that has been sitting around for awhile. Lots of mess and fragments on the first few prints. lol!

It's so nice to be doing art, again.

You said: "Here are some examples just for you...)"

You do realise, that it's a comment section, not a private message? ;D Everyone can see it now.

LOL, yes, totally. I don't mind if anyone else sees them. I was just making the point that I was digging in my photobucket just for the sake of making my point. I'm consequently a very pointy person.

hmm....

i was always wondering about your thoughts of anime, since you yourself are a gamer and nowadays it seems those two have been connected by fans, etc...

i heard FMA is really interesting, although i myself dont read it... but I do remember this scene... i feel bad for Rose and her predicaments..

anyway... some of the things you could improve on are the proportions, and in anime's case, you can base most parts of the body based on head size, and perhaps compare your hands with your head size as well, it helps....

other than that, im glad to hear your back indeed

Yeah, there is a bit of one. I've usually fallen more into the gaming one because of Zelda, than the other. This is the second anime series i've ever really sat down and watched, and the first one I've actually watched through.

My thoughts on it are my thoughts on anything of that nature -- it's a matter of personal conviction. And I say that very carefully. No one should do anything which they know may lead them to sin. Your values shouldn't come from an anime or fantasy book, no more than we should justify our sin by saying "well David lusted after another man's wife and that's in the Bible!" We have been given commandments and also good prudence to know what is right and what is wrong. Every century has had its mode of entertainment though, and this seems to be one in this one, and it's not wrong to enjoy these things occasionally, if we use good discernment. There are good and bad types of entertainment, and like anything, entertainment in larges quantities is wrong. It can be abused, like food, like drink, like romance, like most anything. The only thing we ought ever pour our hearts into without reserve is Jesus Christ, and His holy word.

Anyway ...

If you saw this scene, you must have caught something VERY late in the series!

This drawing isn't done in the style of the anime/manga, but is somewhat modelling more after realism, with personal stylisations. As I stated, I don't/can't draw in the anime style, so I wasn't trying to here. I believe also with realism, heads and hands are also valid usages of measure -- i think a body is about 7 or 8 heads, whereas in anime it's usually 6?

I used that unite here, but it is naturally altered based on perspective (and my reference photos of people dancing.) If you're trying to measure based on visible head and hand alone, then, it's going to seem a little off.

yeah... its difficult to find anything good in anime nowadays....

yeah...too bad the scene isn't "canon" to be true....

of course, the hand size bothered me the most, but i like the colors there...

Canon is a really weird thing when it comes to FMA, I think. You could be of the sort to say that the Manga is the true canon since it was the first instance of FMA. But a HUGE fanbase surrounding FMA is directly after the first Anime, people who have never even read the manga -- making it more likely that there are two distinct and separate canons than a "true and false" one. Then you have the written books to deal with, which are likely less to be considered canon than any of the others.

So in a strange sense, the scene could very much be "true, fictionally" (an oxymoron, that.) Again, the only thing I really added to this drawing is the coat. It's hardly a love scene, though -- if you did watch this, you know why.

There's a second coming out called "FMA: Brotherhood" that is more directly after the Manga, but even that can't be 100% accurate, as animes never are to their original manga.

Me! lol. I can resist it because I'm absolutely incapable of doing it. When it comes to dancing, I have two left... well, I can't even call them feet. It's like I'm suddenly walking on stubs or something.

Thus I commend Edward. Or maybe Winry, who made his automail -- since he DOES have a left "stub" and a metal leg to make up for it, and he can still dance.
