Description I'll be honest. I really wasn't going to submit for this contest. To tell the truth, I usually don't even enter contests. And if I'm really honest, I didn't even know what to make of the various pixelated entries when I first noticed them showing up. I thought it was a bizarre new meme, or possibly that a couple hundred deviants sporadically had the same nostalgia for Mario Paint's old stamp creation feature, and simultaneously forgot to click the little bomb in the corner when they saved it. (Insert SNES robot techno here!)

Cutting to the chase, I caved. Not for any other reason than an excuse to talk about love. And it's not that I am disgusted by the saccharine couplish vibes that erupt during valentine's day. There's nothing wrong with romance, really. It's cute and it is a gift to be enjoyed. But those emotions aren't love.

But consider this: Says the old and popular hymn, "What can wash us white as snow? Nothing but the blood of Jesus."

And that is the crux of the matter, to put it relevantly. It pleased God to redeem His children, and he chose to redeem his children. We're talking children who hated God and offended Him in every vile way there is. Things that if our own children did to us to the same severity, we would never again be able to face them. And yet in redeeming them, God loved them.

So I went for a classic spectrum theme. His blood penetrated a dark world filled with hate and all forms of vileness and sin, he took that darkness on himself, and all who were carried in his blood were cleansed, made pure though they were vile, made children though they long and freely disowned their own Creator. Further, Christ took the pain of sin, the punishment of sin, and all of the Father's hatred for that sin on Himself, that sinners might be saved. Is there really a greater love?

I am sure this will not appeal to many people. I am expecting the famous submissions to display rainbows and messages of how romantic love isn't limited by gender, and silly pictures of NES favorites (because hey, when you're only given so many pixels...!)

But even if you will cast this off as another religious beat-you-over-the-head message, remember one thing. Love is more than feeling, and it is worlds away from being about the types of things you lust after.

Love is to sacrifice, it is to forgive, it is to cherish selflessly, and it is to do these things unconditionally. (Found your relationship on that, it will seriously change the way you see things.) Perfect love is not something found on a romantic holiday, and I would argue it is not something found innately in any man or woman on this earth. But man needs nothing greater than such a perfect Love.

And in keeping with the theme, it is in love that I share that with you. It is in love that I share that, and it is a portrait inasmuch as it is a portrait of my own redemption, because when a person is redeemed, God looks and sees not him, but the work of Christ. Could there be a better portrait, then, for one of the redeemed but that faithful and enduring cross?
//

Edit: I'm aware of what it looks like. I didn't see that at the time, but, yeah. Hindsight. I'll be staying away from pixelart, I think. XD

Off topic, I like your name. I just hatched my Riolu on pokemon pearl a couple nights ago (and believe it or not, he helped me catch mesprit -- I used the quick attack to get it down to level 1!!) I'm going to use Riolu as part of my starting team on Soul Silver when it comes out, because my starter pokemon usually wind up following me to the end, and I'd love to have a tried and trained Lucario in my team

Did you read the artist's comments, particularly toward the end? It sums it up.

The contest itself stated that it could either be a literal self portrait, or some aspect of you, or representation. This is a representation of perhaps the most vital, most pivotal thing, something that has changed me and defines me absolutely and thoroughly.

I am a blood-bought sinner of Jesus Christ. My sin, my darkness, my wickedness were poured out on Him, and purified. I am loved, though undeserving, though born God-hating, by a gracious God.

I was very intentional about this. It wasn't as some, who saw "valentine's contest" and drew a heart. I'm not claiming to be the embodiment of love. But I am saying that I was absolutely wretched, and God absolutely redeemed me, and instead of looking upon me and seeing my unrighteousness, He only will see that wonderful work that Christ did on the cross. Theologically speaking there isn't a more accurate portrait of a Christian than the cross.

I tried to draw a star of david, but I couldn't do it well on the huge pixels. :c So I did a Menorah. :3

Ah, yes, that can be tricky with such a limitation on pixels, and the various angles.

It's an 11x11 case in this instance. That doesn't make things any easier. But, if you'd like, I came up with a few ideas that you can use if you want to try :: [link]

Click to full view it if you need. There's 3 designs there. I personally like the last one most, but it depends if you need the extra line up top or not

Use/change it how you wish! You have absolute full rights/credit to the design, I just did it for fun. I think there are a lot of creative, beautiful and maybe colorful things you could do with it!

Thank you for showing what TRUE love is in this contest. It's wonderful to see an entry with a cross among other "wordly" depictions of love.

I think many people don't realize there's a third option to acknowledging a holiday about love -- rather than buying into it or resenting it completely. So I thought I'd help get the message out Thanks!

I love it!

I was wondering where your christian inspired stuff had gone to, through all the fantasy. Good to see you're still there.

It's there, but I'm careful about what I post as theological things go now. I have convictions in depicting Christ also. I honestly haven't had any ideas, lately, since most of what I want to get across is in words, not pictures -- and further, I am being more cautious now not to attempt to teach in a way that it is exhorted scripturally for a man and (not myself) to teach. I want to encourage men and women toward the truth, but at times the way I put myself across has caused too many people to seek me as though I were a pastor, and I am not comfortable with that.

Also :: In a sense, art and fantasy have always been connected for me, and so it's just going to be in my gallery. It's a hobby. For what it's worth, the story I write in and of itself is a portrayal vastly of the state of mankind, fallen and sinful, and there will be hints in even that art, here, for anyone patient enough to follow the story of it. But no, it's not Christian art in really any sense. But a man who hunts need not bring home a Christian deer, only pray over his meal; a man who sells spoons for a living need not convince his buyers that the spoons have spiritual significance (that would be blasphemous even,) but only to, as he is in the world, set an example and be always ready to testify to that dear Truth that saved him. There is a reason I keep a subtle flavor of things in a fantasy story, because regardless of my own stances, fantasy is fantasy and should never attempt to direct the strides of a man's life -- that is for Scripture to do. It's my conviction to take it all with a grain of salt. I do it for fun, and as a hobby, but it has little importance to me beyond that. Consequently this is an art site and a funnel for that hobby. If I draw spiritually it will be here, but the bulk of what I do for the Lord is in prayer and the reading of His word and in the serving of His people, per the things we are instructed to do. If every time I wanted to draw, I forced myself to think up art thoroughly "Christian" ...Well, suffice to say it would become a gimmick. Nothing has done more dishonour to the gospel than gimmicky and half-hearted teaching. I want to be careful of that.

All said and done, It would still be impossible to watch me (mainly because of journals) and not hear the gospel

good

I hadn't really read your journals recently (to tired, watching has more appeal to reading then), and I saw the ankh coming through here and there and was worried. But now I know I need not be worried

Chrishankhah In reply to Nikolaj [2010-02-17 00:45:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's specific to the character, not me! I used to wear ankhs and have quite an obsession, but did away with that shortly after I was saved. (As an interesting side note, my mascot will probably become baffled and perplexed every time I write a theological journal.) Her ankh mainly has mainly to do with the character's origin. It'd be the same if it was Logan's Run fanart or something obscure. lol.
