I suppose this was a long time coming, I've been meaning to do redesigns of the original gen 1 starters for a while, and I figured what better a time than now with Red/Blue/Yellow being rereleased with wifi this weekend. I'm very much looking forward to seeing if a competitive gen 1 battle scene crops up, as busted as those games are.

These guys are all based off of a conglomerate of existing animals, while still trying to stay true to the basis of each pokemon's original design and have them remain readable. I think these "realistic" pokemon redesigns are some of my favorite things to work on, I always end up having a ton of fun with them. Bulbasaur was probably the one I had the most fun with, turning the "bulb" on its back into a mass of developing roots and plant matter growing under its skin, which will eventually burst open and bloom once it evolves.

Anyways, I might take these a bit further and do the evolutionary trees of each one of these guys. Maybe make a series out of it if people are interested enough.
