Hey! I still wanted to draw some skulls after that last Undertale piece, so I whipped this up in my free time. I've been reading a lot of spooky stories and tales of bizarre things happening to people here lately, and among them have been plenty of accounts of people who have experienced sleep paralysis. Basically it's when a person regains consciousness in a transitional state between waking and dreaming, and temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, or react. This is often accompanied by horrifying hallucinations that the victim is unable to react to, and a sense of crushing weight pressing on the victim's chest is an extremely common occurrence most people who experience sleep paralysis attest to.

As I've read more and more about it I've gotten pretty fascinated with it, partly because of its influence throughout art history, and how many of the different depictions of the phenomena from different cultures and time periods all share common similarities.  So, that's what this is inspired by. Attempting something more atmospheric than I usually go for was a lot of fun, and I certainly want to make more things like this in the future.

Truly horrifying stuff, and you captured it perfectly.  You could easily write a short horror story based on this picture alone.  Keep up with the awesome!

Thanks so much! I'm still fascinated with the subject, and listen to people's stories whenever I get the chance. I've been having a ton of weird dreams here lately, and am very interested in making a series of work based off of them as well as the very few instances of sleep paralysis I've experienced since making this piece. Just have to find the time to actually do it, which is way harder than it should be haha.

I once had an experience similar to sleep paralysis. I was trying to sleep on my friends couch when suddenly I couldn't move any part of my body. My eyes shot themselves closed and I couldn't open them. When I finally was able to open them a little I saw a tall shadow figure standing right in front of me. I swear to God I felt something grab the back of my legs too. At that point I tried yelling for help but I couldn't speak. Eventually the figure disappeared and I could move again. It doesn't help that my friend keeps saying his house is haunted lol

That sounds pretty similar to a lot of the stories I have heard, so yeah I'd say that checks out as sleep paralysis. Just out of curiosity, is that the only experience you've had with it, or have you had recurrences?

Nope, that was the only one.

That sounds terrifying. I've had similar experiences with sleep paralysis myself. Usually its a feminine or androgynous shadow figure.

Yep! I've been trying to used reddit more recently so I've put up a couple things over there. I wouldn't have thought you'd be one to browse the spooky side of that site though, lol.

Wow, this is really interesting. I've heard about a few people with Sleep Paralysis on other forums, and I think this captures the element of fear very well.

It is some seriously scary stuff. I KIND of want to experience a full blown case of it once for myself at some point, but at the same time........

maybe too spooky.

Holy shit but I've seen a white humanoid with red eyes during my sleep paralysis on multiple occasions? I've never read up on it, is that common with victims of sleep paralysis? Gorgeous image, it definitely captures the terror of that particular experience well

Wow, that is really interesting actually. No I don't recall that being something I have come across reading stories of peoples' experiences. Generally the most common themes across multiple people seem to be massively tall pitch black figures that tower to their ceilings with red eyes standing next to the bed, or a pitch black cat sitting on their chest once again staring at them with red eyes.

Hit me up with a note If you're interested in relaying your experiences, I'd love to hear more about it! I've had a mild experience with sleep paralysis myself as a kid that I still remember to this day 20-ish years later, so I'd be happy to trade a story for a story haha. Oh, and thank you! Means a lot to hear that from someone who has experienced the condition for themselves.
