Description Deep within one of several construction buildings at Tracy Construction and Aerospace, The revolutionary, reusable, single stage rocket, the "Neptune-1" is being developed.

The "Neptune-1" was primarily designed to reduce the cost of travel between space stations It could also be fitted for long range exploration missions.

Designed by Jeff Tracy's mysterious new chief designer and renowned physicist Sir Jeramy Hodges. the first test flight began early in 2064, piloted by Colonel Jack Harris and Jeff's son, John Tracy. On the return leg of the journey contact was lost and John was recovered hours later in the south pacific with an unconscious Harris in Neptune's escape capsule.

Johns account of a massive system failure sending the ship into an out of control spin (which had also knocked out Colonel harris) pointed to an unseen flaw in the ships design. The prototype however was never recovered as the ocean was too deep at that point.

The project was deemed a failure and most of the accounts of the Neptune where lost during an electrical fire in the TDA archives.

But the story doesn't end there...

Part 2 in my attempt to rationalise to some degree the backstory to Thunderbirds. Here we have Thunderbird 3 built under the cover of being some space shuttle replacement that failed and then craftily stolen for IR's purposes. I'll admit it's not perfect, but I prefer this to the Automated production line concept in the comics. I like the idea theres a special story behind each one that makes them somewhat unique. It also makes them very hard to replace, like real characters.
Not entirely happy with the picture but after 5 days I've decided to let it out, Did a lot of research into NASA's Vehicle assembly building for this one as well as a few references to Doppleganger.

did you do one for tb 5? it's going to be kinda hard to make that one "suddenly vanish" or get scrapped.

I'm digging your behind-the-scenes looks a lot. I really wouldn't mind more of this for the other crafts. Even more ambitous, perhaps, would be how Tracy Island was built... and refitted for housing giant machines of mass... rescue

Just a small point, but it was nagging away in the back of my mind, and I can't be bothered to swap back to my main account to say it; the little 'ridges' on TB-3's support struts are actually retrograde thrusters. Meh, I just needed to say that, I'm way too pedantic for my own good.. Β '-_-

I've just noticed, is that a Blue Domo? down the bottom there, buy right hand booster. Does that mean that the Domo like the Transmitter/Fire truck started as a commercial vehicle too?

Yes it is , a little bit of lazy scene populating on my part. I think Sam mentions it is commercial in the manual.

Ah thought so. Also Love the back story. I can just seen as John gets Jack out after making the water Landing, Virgil Brings in the TB2 prototype to airlift it to the island.

Very nice, Thunderbird 3 still is one of the best interplanetary spacecraft in fiction (it caught up to Sunprobe in only a few hours after all.)

Yes, I actually remember something about a calculation that stated that TB3 would've had to accelerated to about 0.25c for that mission.

Also a bit of trivia in case you didn't know: Thunderbirds One and Two are capable of reaching LEO under their own power and can be retrofitted for interplanetary travel. They got up to some awesome stuff in the comics.

Yes, if I remember correctly TB1 was attacked by a giant tentacle monster in that one.

I am not qualified to critique anyone's work in this genre, so I do not feel I have the right to do so. I do however, enjoy browsing the art and commenting and tweaking through suggestion, comparison etc.... I find this and the one of Thunderbird Four, and of Thunderbird Two excellent, original and thought provoking. I could imagine an entire TV series, or books on the various back-stories of how International Rescue came into being. Well done and best of luck in your future endeavors.Β

I do like the idea of an origin story however if this craft is to be used to frequently save peoples lives someone is going to make the connection "Hey, thunderbird 3 looks a lot like that neptune craft that dissapeared a while back"
love the work, great to be able to peak into the heart of such a well concealed craft.

I like it. Mine has used a lot of "stolen technology" to rationalise it. It makes a lot of sense - especially if The Hood is working for the people who want it back!

Nice, that's really awesome that you're trying to think of better backstories This is just the thing a Thunderbirds movie could be based on, stuff like this. I really wouldn't mind an origin story film that goes this much into detail and doesn't have Alan as a 14-year old no kids at all preferrably

Id love to do a graphic novel about it. Id save the movie to something that reflected the series more.

dougurasu In reply to Chrisofedf [2012-12-01 15:14:33 +0000 UTC]

That's true, but quite a few times 50 minutes is already a bit long for a Thunderbirds story A graphic novel would be awesome, but that's one BIG project
