Description
Companion piece to:And part of the set of:
My favourite Thunderbird in action, with explosions. Thunderbird 1 usually ends up being my favourite in every iteration of Thunderbirds and the new series is no different. Weta did a very good job on this one from the slight streamlining to all the extra features. Still don't know why the back rotates but not going to complain.
While I am enjoying the new seres, one thing stands out as missing from the tried and tested formula, stuff blowing up. I had heard rumours prior to release that ITV had put out a no explosion rule as they where deemed too violent and to be honest I didn't really believe it (there was stuff exploding in the test reels.)
That said, nothing in the series so far has actually needed to explode so you never know I guess.
Have been really pushing myself to learn more about blender and 3d modelling, this model of TB1 required virtually no touching up in Photoshop which is a huge step forward for me.
Made in Blender, Photoshop Vue.

Your TAG art is the best available, and this is a fantastic image in concept and execution!
I agree that TB1 has been sadly underused in the new series - I believe it's a fault of conception on the part of the production staff. They hit a home run with how they rejuvenated TB5 as a vital Thunderbird, but have given no thought as to what TB1's role/speciality is in the new format. It should have the most heroic reputation as it can be the first on site but has to 'hold the line' until more specialised equipment is available (basically what Scott and TB1 had to do in End of the Road). That said, a 25 minute show doesn't have time to spare for this sort of action.
The unanswerable question is (other than it's speed) what does TB1 have/do that the others cannot?
She looks good and she's always well animated, but even the show's writers can't think what to do with her - they even make her inferior to the TV21, when really while the TV21 had more raw power, the point should have been made that TB1 has control, agility a versatility in a way that the proto-Thunderbird TV21 does not.

Good stuff. There is not a lot of realistic looking G&S Anderson material out there.

Ridiculous! The explosions were one of the best things about the original Thunderbirds.

The explosion quota def goes up later into the season. I believe T1's rotation back is to adjust the flight of the ship once switching to horizontal mode. As it's basically a missile with a steering wheel it needs to constantly adjust trajectory so as not to crash into things. I'm not an aerospace person though so I can't be sure. I just adore how the physics of the show is more sound that your regular children's show. The science and knowledge of chemical properties and math are astounding. While probably not perfect all the time I do adore how these complex concepts are being introduce to young minds by strong role models with steady values. The lessening of violence in the show, as far as I heard, extended to the removal of IR using fire arms.

Very beautiful piece. It has been refreshing to see TB1 being used more as rescue vehicle in the new series, as apposed to a mobile staging ground. I'm not sure which of the new Thunderbirds are my favourite yet. As for explosions... I hadn't even noticed that, they're doing it so well that you don't need them to make it exciting.
Very nice artwork sir Proceeding to favourite the rest...

They've been making up for it in this half of the show. Much appreciated.

Finally TB-1.
Must admit am still out on the canopy when he has a Virtual Reality system - one that is very well done may I add.
That said, I love how the people who did this caught the speed and grace of this ship - I love how she flies - especially the thunderous boom when she breaks the barrier of sound - GLORIOUS!!
I also love the way Scott remote controls her too - she is more of a ship that before - and that is a good thing.
Finally, the music to the launch of 1,2, and 3 - its stirring stuff - I love it; the old Thunderbird launch theme is great but the new one is so stirring; it makes you feel like you want to get into those ships and fly; and I love the bit when TB-1 is manned and then raised into its launch position - lights come on, the silo opens - YEAH!!
I loved it so I did a pic inspired by that music. Great music lifts a series
And again an excellent blender pic - you have done them all sterling work sir

Between his jet pack and grapple gun I think Scott's going to be fine.

That's gorgeous work. I think it's a lot stronger than the Thunderbird 2 piece, but the new TB2's 'blocky' design makes it a tricky one, I suspect, to make work as art? Lovely lighting. The explosions rumour makes no sense to me!

Thanks, and thanks for the twitter share. I don't find TB'2s blockyness is much of an issue, just means it has different "beauty angles" from the classic one.
The explosion rumour seems to have been debunked by the Nukes in Slingshot

Fantastic render of TB1, I Love it!!
Thunderbird 1 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine due to all the airtime it's getting on the new series, I'm liking all the new Thunderbirds designs.
As for the rotation, I've noticed the back rotates when TB1 powers down her booster rockets from launch when changing to horizontal flight, you will also notice the wings open when this happens and retract when rotating back to it's original position.
Spoiler Alert!!
The best reference for this is Thunderbirds Are Go episode 7 'Runaway', at about the 12min 40sec mark, you will see Scott manually operate TB1 via visual remote and reposition (rotate) TB1's rocket exhausts. There you will see the wings retract simultaneously when the rear is rotated and the rocket boosters are engaged.
Makes sense to me, TB1's booster speed will probably rips it's wings off if left open, another tiny little interesting detail I've noticed is the smaller tail wings are also maneuverable to aid with TB1's roll, pitch and yaw
So I'm loving all the attention to detail they're giving to the series.

Fantastic. As for the no explosion rule.... I can't imagine the Stingray opening credits without the blowing water at the opening credits or in the classic Thunderbirds series without the exploding refinery.

Production on S2 is already underway. This is actually the second version of TB1 for the show. The first one was used in early marketing, it was longer and had a top canopy.

I'm quite smitten with the new TB1 as well. The cockpit canopy stood out as a bit weird at first - but it actually makes quite a lot sense (more so than the singular side hatches of the original design - Scott was pretty much flying her blind back then...)
I'm also quite impressed, as the new TB1 seems to be capable of quite a lot more than the old one - she's gone from merely a fast recon craft to a versatile rescue-capable craft herself.
And I couldn't help laughing at poor Brains dangling from her last weekend... XD

Also Saturdays episode marked her first screen solo mission, which was pretty cool.
