Description This artist thanks you in advance for your open mindedness...

Well this is probably a sure fire way to annoy people, as you might have guessed this is the Thunderbird 1 design from the 2004 Thunderbirds movie, designed by Dominic Lavery. While I know the film has its major share of problems, I like concentrating on its strengths, one of the films coolest aspects was it's production design and I'd very much cite it as one of the key influences in my work.

I have a little bit of history with this thing. Back when the film was announced I followed its production really closely, my skills as an artist where really just developing and when the designs for the new Thunderbirds where rolled out I took to them immediately, particularly TB1, here is my first attempt on her (age 13).

This is her in action from 2005: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJt_-w…

Coming back to her was a really nostalgic experience, it was a challenge recreating a lot of the intricate details on the hull that I simply couldn't do when I was 13.  The image was inspired by a painting by Andrew Probert. 3.bp.blogspot.com/-VYmZ9C5BMZs…

With the first views of the new Thunderbird craft beginning to filter out i've been seeing a lot of debate/anger about some of the designs being changed. Personally, I like what i've seen so far.

Admittedly this is something thats down to opinion with no right answer, it also seems to be a generation thing, after all, growing up i've had 4 Tardis consuls, several dozen bat-mobiles, 3 Daleks, 5 Enterprises etc, where as there really was only 1 set of Thunderbirds until 2004.  Redesigns are something i've come to expect and enjoy about the "remake experience". A good redesign takes something your used to and lets you rediscover it all over again.

To me it's not "updating" it, its not making it "better", its not destroying anyones childhood (unless you have a really short memory), it's a variation on a theme and I like that . It builds on what the original designer started and allows it to evolve. In those respects the film TB1 is a great design, it adds a bit more airplane while maintaining the rocket look, you have windows to see out of, the swivelling jets at the back help VTOL. It's cool

What does upset me is when an artist makes a pass at a design for fun and then gets a ton of hate for it, often no attempt is made to take into account the artistic technique, the merits of the design or the imagination that went into it, It's different and therefore simply "wrong". I myself have been accused of ruining Thunderbirds from everything from changing designs, to not matching the original color temperatures of the episodes themselves. Ironically however, when I redesigned the Eagle and labeled it a prototype, they loved it.

FWIW, I had no arguments with the technology designs in TB2004. Even the story was quite good (and a plausible reboot/explanation of just what The Hood's beef with International Rescue might be). My only problem was the decision to turn it into a Teen Adventure Movie by de-aging Alan and Tintin.

I was very excited and surprised to stumble on this image when I was trawling around the internet for references - I thought I was the only person who was a big fan of the 2004 redesign of Thunderbird 1!

I sent you a note as well to this effect but wanted to leave a comment on this image as well. Your work in general is hugely impressive and I love the sense of speed you impart with this particular render.

I've recently had a go at producing a 3D model of this particular Thunderbird 1 design myself - below is a link to a gallery of renders I made of my particular attempt at this, which was done in Sketchup, just because I like making life more difficult for myself! xv323.deviantart.com/gallery/5…

Would love to 'swap notes' on this - in terms of rendering I'm still pretty useless, and as I say, your stuff is jaw-dropping!

Ah! I only just spotted the original in the reflection. That's awesome!

I've seen the comments in various places that I think you're referring to... over-protective fanboys are a strange breed. Remember that Katee Sackhoff got death threats over being cast as Starbuck in BSG? Sure, that's the extreme end but it shows what the mentality can lead to. I can't quite believe there are people out there who will automatically hate the new series of Thunderbirds because inevitably the vehicle designs aren't going to be a a millimetre-perfect replication of the originals. It's been literally 50 years since the original. Technological progress, social progress, political changes and attitudes have turned the world upside down since then. You cannot bring it back unchanged because that would, if anything, be an even bigger insult to the spirit of the original show, which was to project the hopes and dreams of an era 100 years into the future. That's the real point.

The worst part is the "you should do you own thing, and be original!!" comments - as if people who have done these designs have never been original. People do original things all the time, it's just that few people ever care about them.

Anyway, I think that rant is taking a turn for the negative so I'll stop there.

They are a fickle lot I definitely agree on that last part, if it hadn't been for the fan art i've done id never have got any of my professional jobs.

The film had it's problems but the updates to the ships were quite cool and it's good to see the craft again.

I love this, and the little article you wrote to accompany it. My thoughts exactly! I personally love all the 2004 designs, and really wish people would stop overreacting. If you do not like it, you do not need to ruin it for those who do.

Do you have plans to do any of the other redesigns? I would love to see Thunderbird 2!

Probably at some stage, 2 in particular is quite a challenging shape.

I left a comment but it disappeared into cyberspace.

What I love about your design is that it's more aerodynamic and therefore the high speeds are plausible, whereas the original, while always a favourite, seemed too 'boxy' to be realistic.

I particularly like the way you have put an image of the original TB1 in the water below your design. A very nice touch.

And if my original post shows up along with this new one, please accept my apologies.

Its actually based on Dominic Lavery's design from the 2004 movie, so I can't really take credit for the look

Glad you like the artwork!

I didn't even notice that the reflection was different. Nice catch!

Personally, I love the 2004 designs. They seem to make the ships more grounded in reality by incorporating existing technologies into their designs (like the swivel jets that you mentioned on TB1 here). Granted, I would have been nice to actually see them doing something in the movie, but that's a discussion for another time.

What you've done here is depict Thunderbird 1 in the way it should have been depicted in the film; it's racing toward the danger zone. There is a sense of urgency in this picture, which is a necessity if Thunderbirds have any hope of being exciting (this was one of the major failures of the film: Because the source material was dumbed down for kids, the threat of danger never really felt genuine).

In any case, I love this picture as much as I love all of your Thunderbirds work, and I can't wait to see more from this theme.
