The Milky Way Galaxy is a really big place. This goes without saying, yes, but it is over 100,000 light years from end to end with anywhere from 100 to 250 billion stars. In the Teeming Universe universe, hundreds of millions to billions of worlds are inhabited by either unicellular or multicellular life, but on the contrary only a handful of worlds host advanced life.

In this illustration, we can see about half of the advanced civilizations in the milky way galaxy. Aside from us humans, there are only about 30 or so sapient species in the galaxy that we may deem as comparatively advanced. Some of these species, such as the Yaetuans, are more advanced than us and regularly travel across their local solar systems. On the other hand, there are other species such as the Phoeleans, which as of today are still in an era akin to Europe's feudal ages. Some like the Behlah have felt their civilization advanced enough, whereafter they stopped developing after creating a dyson swarm around their sun. Others, such as the Lojkanex, fully embraced artificial intelligence and robotics, leaving their world entirely to venture into interstellar space between stars.

Each of these distant species have their own histories, struggles and victories, but the chances of them sharing their stories with each other is utterly impossible. Given the great distances involved, nearly all of the species in the galaxy have never come in contact with another. This is why humans have never come in contact with another species, and this is also why the yaetuan species largely believes themselves to be the only intelligent species in the galaxy.
