Description It seems I have trouble speedpainting in Photoshop. Mainly because I get distracted, and keep improving a picture until it's no longer a speedpaint.

I spent quite a while fiddling around with the colors and composition on this picture. It looks fairly quick, but I think I must have went through at least three different backgrounds. And at least as many color schemes.

I tried adding buildings, trees, clouds to add a bit more shape to the sky. In the end, I removed all those things, and decided to go for a clear night sky.

As usual, I'll upload minor edits if I decide to improve anything.

Process Reel: [link]

Minor edit: slight color change.

That's a great movie.
Maybe I should make a minor edit and add Draco's constellation in there...
It would be a fun reference to put in there. I'll probably do that later tonight.

Love the two characters and the dragon's eyes *O* The sky is perfect too. If that planet in the sky is the moon, I think you should add more grey spots on its surface... but if it's another planet with a different satellite, I think those blue shades fit very well with the white of the planet and the sky. Very good! °O°

I added a few more dark areas on the moon, so hopefully it looks better now.

aha... i just noticed you changed the color on this .. probably was a long time ago. i defintely like the change... the version i have is a bit too bright green for the setting.
looking through your pics again, i think this has become my favorite of yours. such a beautiful dragon...

it's astounding how you can get so much done with a very simple environment I like how the sky looks like it has a bit of Northen Lights thing to it. I'm really glad you put a download version, because I wanted to see them details up close XD
Well done with the dragon scales, I like how the really big ones are lines a bit and then detailed off with the spots. The lighting here is beautiful, it's amazing to see whites, and really dark green blend into each other so well without looking odd.
Also- Love the person's clothes! Very fantasy like haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to JesnCin [2010-06-18 14:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
I can upload a larger version, if you want higher resolution. I always like it when people post download versions, so I make sure to do it, too.
I'm definitely having fun with this scale method. It seems to be a rather reliable way to draw the scales without making them distracting. It's easier to control aspects like how rough or smooth the dragon appears to be, too. I think I'm getting better with people, too.

Like most of my pictures, I did this one in grayscale first. Adding the colors in later made it easier to pull off the lighting on that green surface. Drawing the shades of green in manually probably would have made shading like that quite difficult.
Would you like to see a process image?
I could probably put one of those together.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JesnCin In reply to Chromamancer [2010-06-18 14:46:02 +0000 UTC]

aw you don't need too, maybe you could write into the artist comments to click download for a big, yummy view
yes the scale method here does make it look less distracting from the rest of the piece, which is really balanced out well

That would be nice! You said you had a lot of mind changes with this one, maybe you could post a WiP so we can see how your brain works >:]
You're welcome!

I'll make one of those process images later today, then.

I'll have to build it from my layers, though. It won't have some of the alternate backgrounds I tried, because I deleted some of the layers as I went. It should show how the shading and coloring worked, though.

Oh, the texture, the lovely, lovely texture!

Also a great night sky Some folks place stars too evenly when they try to do nightscapes... real stars aren't placed evenly! Well done!

Chromamancer In reply to noordle-doordle [2010-06-18 14:35:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Those textures are a lot of fun to use.
Uniform stars tend to look rather boring and flat.

Anyway, I found an awesome tutorial about drawing star fields recently. [link]
I tried to use some of the techniques from that tutorial. I found it after I merged a few layers, so I didn't use all their dust cloud methods. Perhaps I'll go back and retouch the background again.

WIN!

The shading is great, the dragon design is nice, and the scene just works in that "simple awe" kind of way.

Also nice how you give the dragon a sense of personality with nothing more than a simple pose and a gaze. Brilliant.

there's nothing wrong with not being able to speed paint! Hell I'm such a perfectionist I will redo an entire half of a piece if I don't feel good about it!

Chromamancer In reply to TreeClimber [2010-06-18 00:12:40 +0000 UTC]

That's what I did on this one.
I like the end result.

I do think speedpaints can be a good way to practice, though. They help mix things up and are a fun way to try new techniques.
I'll probably give a few of them a shot, but I'll definitely keep making these sorts of longer pictures too.
