Description This is a remake of my original Village Guardian piece. [link]

It is a special picture to me, because I think it marks a turning point in my art. Many of the techniques I've been observing and practicing came together well in that piece.
I still really enjoy the composition and concept, but it was looking a little dated next to my recent art, so I thought I would re-draw the picture, using the things I've learned over the last year and a half.

I made it wider, too.
Enjoy!

I'm glad to hear that it's an improvement.
I tried to include many of the details that I've been practicing lately.

Making this one at a higher resolution helped, too.

Wow. Remaking this picture really shows the magnitude of improvement you've undergone in such a relatively short time.

Though never be afraid to delve into some aspects of your old style if you feel the urge. Though this remake tends to feel more realistic (it's got more "dimension" to it), the previous version, and other artwork around that era, had a unique quasi-stained-glass style that made for an interesting "story-feel," like a mural.

Thank you.
It was fun picking a piece like this to redraw, too. It's easy to show improvement when you redraw something that didn't turn out well, but the original here was definitely the best piece I'd ever made, when I completed it.

That is a rather interesting idea, too. At that time, I was basically enlarging images made on oekaki boards, while now I'm working in higher resolutions and shrinking the final image. Using that effect intentionally some time might be rather interesting.

Making it look like an improvement while retaining the good qualities of the original was a rather interesting challenge. I think it turned out well, though.

Gorgeous! You've perfectly captured the charm of the original, and somehow managed to make it more awesome!!
I'm awed by the sheer detail on the houses and the grass, not to mention the dragon looks great! Wonderful job!!

Chromamancer In reply to xXAurastarXx [2010-12-23 02:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
I had to play around with a lot of extra layers, to try and recreate that charm. That was the toughest part of it, making it seem to be the same, in a way. Then, I tried to use things that I've learned since then to add more detail into the picture.

I'm rather proud of how it turned out.

Looks like your really making my decision to watch you worth it.

The dragon art you create is great, I have the urge to favorite alot of your stuff, but I didn't want to end up potentially cluttering your inbox by favoriting too many things.

Anyway, nice work.

Ooh yes, so much calmer 8)
The colors are a lot better, and I love the wider feel of it compared to the first one; especially with a glimpse of those trees behind that house
The composition in this piece has a more intact feel too (the log fits in better, the roads lead to the house doors, etc)
plus shiny scales I like how it really looks like fire is reflecting from it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to JesnCin [2010-12-22 22:43:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

I tried to give a bit more space to those trees. I made the first one right after a set of background practice pieces, so I didn't really have a good idea about how to draw trees, then. I wanted to leave a bit more space for them now, though.
So, I think this has had some nice improvements.

The shiny scales were rather fun to draw, too. I put a layer with some harder lighting, and no texture above some of the other shading, for that effect with the shiny scales. I'm glad to hear that the lighting worked well.

xTernal7 In reply to ??? [2010-12-22 14:06:57 +0000 UTC]

This one is indeed improved... But I think it lacks a bit of contrast, a bit darker shadows... Because it somehow doesn't seem that fire smoke should be the darkest part of the image. (Well it seems the darkest part to me.) I also think that fire smoke should reflect a light a bit more than it is...
But indeed, this one is awesome, no argument to that.

Awesome as pretty much always I'd say.

And dragon seem to grow a bit as well, over the year.

...Wish I had progress at my drawing skills...

Chromamancer In reply to xTernal7 [2010-12-22 14:43:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you enjoy it.
The dragon is a little wider in this piece, and I widened the view a little, so it does look a little larger.

You're quite right about the smoke. I just made a minor edit that adds a little lighting on the smoke to brighten it up, and slightly darkens the trees in the back, so the edges of the image are a bit darker now. That was an excellent observation. Thank you very much for pointing it out.

xTernal7 In reply to Chromamancer [2010-12-22 15:31:56 +0000 UTC]

No problem I was glad to help.
And that minor improvements made some not so insignificant improvement of the artwork indeed...

Chromamancer In reply to xTernal7 [2010-12-22 22:05:35 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I always think it's always annoying when there is that one distracting feature that detracts from a decent piece of art.

So, I like making those sorts of adjustments when I can.

Re-drawing this one was a lot of fun. It was extra tough, getting the details right again, but I think it worked out rather well.
... It's calendar sized, too.

I love the scale, tree and grass details the most, that was were most of the changes are. I must add, it would be so cool if dragons did live with us.
I am looking so forward to the end results with the calender.
