Description
This is how I draw rocks and soil in both Corel Painter and traditional media (mostly oil, acrylic, watercolor or oil pastel). There are no special brushes, filters, tricks, etc specific to Painter. Though I've never used photoshop, I assume these techniques would work there too. They're not difficult and take little drawing skill--just a lot of tedious practice. This tutorial assumes you already know how to handle basic light and shadow on an object; if not, there are other tutorials on dA for that. You can see more of my references here [link] but this is the first tutorial I've made and I would appreciate some feedback--is it useful, does the format work for you, is there some information you feel is missing?
Some examples of how I've used these techniques for rocks and soil in digital paintings:

I usually find that tutorials are more inspiring than actually helpful, but this is fantastic. I did some practice rocks and then applied the techniques to a painting, and it actually works! It's obvious that a lot of skill goes into everything you do, but I love that these techniques can be grasped quickly!

Glad it helps (and your English is great, by the way)! I am hoping to find time to make a trees/grass/shrubs tutorial by the end of the summer.

DA is the only place I post my stuff. I'm not sure why it isn't letting you view it. Hopefully it's a temporary note.

Practice a lot. When I first started drawing years ago, my stuff didn't look very good, but I kept drawing at least a little bit everyday, and I didn't just draw "exciting" stuff like fantasy creatures and action scenes; I mostly drew from pictures or things that I saw around me and tried to make my version as close to the real thing as possible. I still use a lot of references when I draw. And for practicing working in color, I recommend something easy to blend and cover-up mistakes with, but cheap--like oil pastels. I drew with a pencil all the time when I was a kid, and that helped me get the basic outline of stuff right, but left me really out of practice when it came to coloring things--the lighting and texture especially. I think I really improved when I moved onto pastels, because they forced me to think about color and lighting just as much as form. Hope that helps!

Since I don't like using textures (makes me feel cheap...) this will help out tremendously.
