Description This image depicts what I think the inner workings of the GR-17c would be like. I also decided to add more detail to the rifle like a proper attachment rail and retractable iron sights so it can be aimed without a scope or an attached sight.

My Gauss weapons are what I imagine UNSC weapons to be like in the year 2669 - a number you get by adding 117 to 2552 - the Master Chief's service tag and the year the year Halo is set in. I also like to think of Section 8 and Halo being set in the same fiction, with Section 8 being set in 2669 so that their fictions can remain individual without being messed up by each other.

Technically, I don't believe that railgun technology could be reduced to a proper infantry weapon size. Too much energy and recoil.

Who knows, people once thought the sound barrier was impassable and many other things we have today could not be dreamed of in the past.

Its possible engineers will eventually overcome the issues described with these sorts of designs, as they have many times in the past with other problems.

so that it can use more that one round type without having to load new magazines into the weapon. Helps when you have a favourite primary ammo type and a favourite secondary ammo type.

its a high explosive shell that is designed to send enough explosive force though tank armour to completely force it apart

I guess so, colour schemes would also be available and I could make new attachments as all I have currently are scopes and sights when the gauss weapons also have rails for other types of attachments, people would just have to give what function the new attachments would perform
