Description Though I post this for the enjoyment of my friends, it is primarily to discredit the claims of one Evolutionxbox who publicly accused me of lying to the point that my Avatar piece was not a digital painting as I had claimed but was in fact a photo-manipulation that I was fraudulently taking credit for. It is fortunate for me that I took the time to save snapshots of the piece's completion to validate my claims. As previously stated to him and others, I absolutely used reference photos of the actors in order to capture their likeness for the piece.
Evolutionxbox, I have saved you the trouble of finding the other refs and included them on the bottom as well as the composition ref I based on an unused book cover design I created years ago. You asked how the painting could so perfectly match the actors without it being a photo-manip and the answer is very simple--practice. Thousands upon thousands of hours of practice.
I await your public apology evolutionxbox.

UPDATE: Evolutionxbox has honorably apologized and I request you, my friends, to think him in a better light and not longer feel the need to demean his actions.

This is really amazing! Your process is very inspirational, and I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing!

Too bad about the movie... it had sooo much potential, and they slaughtered it.

Thanks for showing the refs you used including the one for composition
I love the end result; how loose and painterly the strokes are but you still instantly recognize the characters.

I hate that. I redrew the cover of a video game and it got taken down because I was reported for just posting the art instead of drawing it myself by hand. they claimed I just resized a 150 x 200 picture (lol?) and fixed it up a bit. I can't believe how stupid people can be sometimes Anyway, glad you got that figured out

hey my friend. do you use a standard brush set, or do you use your own?

ClintCearley In reply to landoff [2010-10-16 18:59:41 +0000 UTC]

With the exception of Photoshop's standard hard round and soft round 90% of my brushes are custom. I find that I get better results from brushes I make myself as I understand every facet of it's make up. This piece was created with primarily two brushes; a custom bristly and a custom square. FYI, someone else asked me about the square so if you'd like to make one for yourself check out the description here (it's 3 comments down).

Thanks very much. It is good to see a great variety with the work you post up here. I will be doing some as well, when i take some pics of my oils and such. Your pastels are wonderful, I will have to crack mine open in a class and get to it as well. I was surprised to see you using the pastel on a canvas, I never would have thought of using canvas, I'd have thought it would be too coarse. Thanks again, I will keep close tabs on your wonderful work.

The pastels on canvas was a necessity issue; they were the only medium I had at the time Your right though, if you're working on a coarse texture canvas it's very difficult but a smooth texture is fine to work on. As you might have seen from some of the comments, using acetone to paint with the pastels to build a base color was essential for covering such a large area so quickly.

"You asked how the painting could so perfectly match the actors without it being a photo-manip and the answer is very simple--practice"
Best quote ever.

On a side note, I think it`s interesting to see how you develope the image as a whole and don`t work one area to completion and then move on to the next in a compartmental fashion as i think many beginners would be inclined to do.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. - Abraham Lincoln

I think the lesson here is that one should think before he/ she speaks. We are all here to share our love of art. Mutual respect is essential. I came across similar baseless attack before. Although upsetting, the unfounded accusation just highlights the person's immaturity, ignorance and insecurity.

Damascus5, your art is sublime and I look forward to seeing more!

While damascus is no doubt an exceptionally skilled painter, I think we, the commentators (not damascus) don't need to be so harsh on evolutionbox for just being incredulous. It is okay to doubt and question, we all do it, and many excellent painters have in fact, been exposed as what we call "frauds" though I think they too, have a lot of time and skill invested in the works they create. There is no reason to call evolutionbox a loser and jealous and idiot and the other nasty things I've seen here, for not going with the flow, and calling out what he thought was fraudulent. Now that he has been proved wrong, yes, he should apologize to damascus, though if I were in the same position, I wouldn't want to either after these nasty commentators.

I have to disagree, respectfully. When you choose to voice your opinion re. anything, the world has the right to respond in kind. That's the way 'free speech' works. Perhaps *evolutionxbox should've considered this before making his accusations.

When you take on the role of 'whistle-blower', you'd best be very certain of your claims and be well prepared for the fall-out. Evolutionxbox gets what he gets. His approach, to begin with, was confrontational and accusatory. Perhaps, had he been a bit more insightful, he might've taken this up with Damascus in private. There's an enormous difference between a photomanip and/or paint-over, and simply using a few quick hashmarks to get your proportions in the right spots, which is what I suspect happened here. But goodness knows I could be wrong, too!

Vesperius In reply to quickreaver [2010-07-10 22:58:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, they are downright raking this guy over the coals for a bad decision, which I just get tired of seeing around here. But I do agree with you that his approach was unwisely confrontational and arrogant.

Indeed, nobody likes a witch hunt, but we can't control the masses, only ourselves. Best thing one can do is prevent the situation from happening in the first place! Second best thing is apologizing and moving on, just like Evolutionxbox is doing. Live and learn...

Wow... can't believe a loser like that tried to dis-credit your digital painting skills... you'd think he/she would be able to tell from the quality in your other artworks.

Anyway, that poster was insanely good, and seeing these steps makes it awesome - not to mention educational.

Don't be a hypocrite. It makes you loose a lot of credibility. You're welcome to insult someone back (even in the humorously contradictory way that you did), but you could at least be man enough to take what you dish out. You've dug yourself a deep hole, work on getting out of it instead of digging deeper. No need to defend yourself from insults, have the maturity to ignore them and move on. I'm certain you will be called much worse in the future course of your life, as we all will.

Wonderful art, btw, an artist with your skill ought not to be found putting himself in such a situation.

People have been over-attacking you, but you kinda dug that hole yourself.
You really should publicly apologize if for no other reason than to show that you can gracefully back down when you're wrong.

In all honesty, I thought the final product was a photo-manipulation at first. I can see where you were probably coming from, and while i don't know how you actually approached Damascus about the accusation or the method you went about it, I am glad that you did (not saying I'm glad about the method- I don't know the method used). It allowed us to be able to see the work-in-process, and it proved to others (like me) that it actually is a digital painting.

By the way, I love your gallery. Beautiful work. I don't think that "Jealousy rears its ugly head" with you (as someone has said). To me it appears that you were just trying to 'set things straight' with a fellow ATLA-movie artist. I probably would have done the same thing if I had been in your position.

Oy vey. Jealousy rears its ugly head again. Yanno what...even if you DID do quick sketches to get the features in the right places, who gives a floopy?! It's not like that isn't a tried and true methodology, regardless of medium! Clearly, you have drawing skillz. Clearly you can paint. Do what it takes to get the job done! We work in the applied arts; we have clients to answer to, as a rule. *evolutionxbox can blow it out his cakehole.

Awesome progression, I'm sorry to hear that people (or person) have been accusing you of photomanipulation. :\
Not only is it obvious you have great skill in realism painting, but the refs you used to create your painting show completely different light colors and light sources. Sure, the "lines" may match up, but the colors sure don't. If it really was a product of CS5 mixer brushing, then there wouldn't be such consistency in your color scheme.
