Yes, this is for GIMP. ^^
It's a lot easier to do it in photoshop. I think you can just mess with the gamma under exposure to turn it white?

I usually target the area I want to turn white, drag down saturation and then play around with Curves.

Yeah, that would work too. I normally just do a sort of relief technique for small white areas, using erase instead of targeting because it's easier for me to work with.
