And what's the source of this 'fact'? I don't recall it being in How to Read, unless I'm mistaken and it's mentioned during the interview section, where I skipped over a few fairly large chunks of text. If it's from the internet, I wouldn't trust the source. Sorry, I know this comment is so old, but things like this bother me so dang much <_<;;

came from the original author of DN. . .something that was skipped over in the how to read, and no i didn't get the info from the internet, i got it from a reliable source during Anime Club at my college.

That's impossible, since he canonly walks in the manga when he first meets the President of the United States (his feet turn towards each other, so cute!). He also runs from the mob of Kira supporters. I'm willing to accept "weak legs", but a broken back? Hell no. That's not fact, that's a theory. 

Someone from your Anime Club told you this? Tell them to re-read chapter 60 and chapter 80. I think it would be suspicious if one of the riot police was being carried out, so he obviously ran out with the others. I just looked over them to confirm MY facts.

PS: you know what, i would *LOVE* to see the source cited somewhere, just as a technicality to know if it's in the "canon", really...
but i think i will keep this idea, anyway. i always thought there was more to Near than what is directly revealed in the anime/manga. so, this could be part of it. a physical disability of that severity would definitely have an effect on a person, of course in terms of everyday life (in)conveniences, but even just in terms of how he prepares for things and what he has patience for and doesn't have patience for.

wow that would be so interesting. why have most fans (that i know of, at least) not heard of this?!

[trying to remember if we ever see him walk or stand unaided during the anime or manga... cannot remember.]

PS: even with therapy it might not have worked out, depending on the type/area of damage (iirc). it would be just like Near to know that and do the percentages about whether it was worth it to spend those hours and hours of his life in PT vs. studying something he considered useful. i could totally see that happening.
