Description
They survived war, disease, mental illness, tragedy, injuries, and enemies under hundreds of flags and creeds.Β But there's one foe no soldier could ever conquer, nay, no man may survive.Bureaucracy.

As a Navy veteran, I am all too familiar with this... Situation.
I've been dealing with the VA for over thirty years and, while things DID change for the better under the first Bush administration, they went straight into the toilet with the next administration. It wasn't until I got to Oklahoma that I was treated like a human being again.

Thank you for your service and I'm sorry the VA put you through so much trouble for what you should have gotten easily in the first place.Β Β Decent medical care is the very least that's owed to you.

I appreciate your comments. The VA is getting better, but it will take years to correct the damage done, not only to the veterans, but to their trust in the VA and the government.

Sadly, as a veteran, myself. I see it with my own eyes, waaay too often.

we don't treat our veterans with nearly enough respect . we force them to go thru tests to prove what they already know or is obviously wrong , wait to get approved for it for yearsΒ .some don't even live long enough to be approved ,some it finally comes but by then its much too late
when you see a veteran stop and shake their hand as well as thank them for their service
it will make all the difference in the world to them

There are so many things to say, it would degenerate to a rant.
I will just say I'm in agreement with your work.
bravo.

Eighteen months ago I was an active VA volunteer. I was never a vet so my issues are solely of a volunteer trying to plug in, and make an improvement one vet at a time. Β I was kicked out over a whistle blowing I did. Β It wasn't even a major "big deal", just a misappropriation of private data that could be easily fixed. The fix was to kick me off the sign-in computer so I couldn't get into the VA hospital to volunteer.
About this time, I wrote the following three things into my "Journal" on my computer.
1. "Katie and I are walking wounded. We're promised we'll be cycled in for serious psyc help next year. In the mean time, we watch each other closely."
2. "I get meds by the box full. All they do is deaden my ability to do anything. Including think and make my life better."
3. "The VA, if they hadn't blown Alex off as another whiney veteran, and ran the tests, they would have found the embolism, and saved his life."
These percolated for nine months and became the backstory for my WiP. Β I have never written fiction. But Alex's story screamed to be told.

Here Here!
Well Done!
I would like to warn everyone that our normal "deathcare" system is just as bad for us now and getting worse. I was given a permanent auto-immune disorder from a few antibiotics and now they refuse to diagnose it as they would be liable.
The exact same way the treated the vets from the carrier drenched in Fukashima radiation or D.U. exposure. Like their symptoms were all in their heads, to go home and suffer unto death for all they care.
American hospitals have killed more people then anything else since we started recording deaths. Second only to 'Democide'. Sounds trippy but its true...

They have what is quite possibly the worst record keeping system in existence. That, at least, can be easily solved with the storage space of an iPod touch.

I've got a friend at work who has been waiting nearly 6 months to see the VA for his injured back, among other things. It's absolutely ridiculous.

This thing with the VA has so angered me.Β I had been keeping up with some of this since 2010 or so when they were speaking of the slowly building trainwreck.Β It's really gotten out of hand.
What frightens me more is they say they can run healthcare far better than the private sector and yet this is going on.Β I hope people are watching, because if the Government can do this to the soldiers, think of what they can do to the rest of us.
