Back when I was still designing Monochromia's reference sheet, I noted =UnicornsOnFire for a little help with her mane. She designed, and dolled, the version on the left for me to use. I revised, rearranged, and modified it and you can see the final version on the right. Here's the things that were changed:
- More stray hairs
- Rearranged the hair covering her face
- Made her ponytail bigger and more noticeable.
- Made her bow a little easier to work with.
- Made her tail scruffier and messier.
- Waterlogged the end of her tail, instead of keeping the curls (I tried every way I knew to get those to work, but I couldn't, so I just decided to make the tail drag the ground the way it does now).

how did she look before the rainbow factory incident though?

Well, her colors weren't as muted, and her mane/tail were less messy.
She was also a bit more outgoing, like the typical filly, and her bow wasn't torn all to hell.
Her eyes were normal looking, too. Not jet black like they are now.

Monochromia: *she is just sitting at her window one day, staring out absentmindedly when something in the distant bushes catches her eye. It was an earth pony mare, who's coat was as white as new fallen snow. Her mane was long and covered half of her face, and it started out white at the roots and faded to black at the ends. Her tail was rather long and was shaped like a calligraphy brush which had the tip dipped in black ink. The mare's exposed eye was a pure, shining gold, just like the sun. Mono even saw her cutie mark, which was a paintbrush drawing a Japanese sun on her flank.*
Mare: *she is just standing in the small clearing close to Monochromia's house, observing it silently, her mane and tail blowing slightly in the wind. She almost seemed like a ghost herself.*

Monochromia: *flickering gently, she ducks down below the window sill, hoping the ghostly mare outside had not noticed her move. Being a ghost, she could see the mare still watching the house right through the wall, and she hoped she'd walk away instead of moving closer*

Mare: *she just stood there, silently observing the house before she took a couple cautious steps towards it.*

Monochromia: *cowered underneath the windowsill, gently soaking through the floor and turning invisible in the process, hoping whatever the mare had in mind wouldn't damage her only home*

Mare: *she pushes her way through the door, which creaked ominously on it's rusted hinges. She walked inside, clearly cautious but not afraid.* Hello? *She called softly, her voice strong and beautiful* Is anyone here? *She looked around, observing the cobweb covered chandelier and furniture surrounding her*

Monochromia: *reappears behind a wall several feet away. Flickering erratically and emitting a faint ominous glow, she peers out at her intruder with wide eyes. She doesn't speak, however, and she stays mostly out of sight*

Mare: *One of her ears flicked in Monochromia's direction and she looked in her direction, her yellow eyes glowing softly* I know you're back there.

Monochromia: *her voice barely audible, she ducks out of sight again, peering at her intruder through the wall* W-what do you want..? Please.. g-go away..

Mare: *She straightens up* I do not wish to hurt you, young spirit. I am here because I sensed a huge swell of sadness and loneliness in this area, and went to investigate. It's as simple as that.

Monochromia: *steps out from behind the wall, her flickering slowly dying away. She still stays a fair distance away from the mare, however, and when she speaks she's slightly less quiet* Oh.. *she steps slightly closer, her tail trailing a generous amount of factory waters behind her* My name is Monochromia..

Mare: *she looks in Monochromia's direction and smiles.* My name is Anami. Please, come closer so I can see you better.

Monochromia: *tentatively inches closer, still somewhat fearful of the mare*

Anami: *she looks at Monochromia and the smile slowly softens until it disappears from her face. She wasn't scared, more like she was sad.* Oh, my. *When Monochromia looked down, she noticed Anami's shadow wasn't that of an earth pony. She noticed that the shadow was still a pony, but it showed that this pony had wings and a horn, which were invisible to Mono for some reason. She also noticed a strange necklace which seemed to slowly float around her neck, but that too was invisible.*

Monochromia: ...Why is your shadow that of an alicorn but you're just an earth pony? *her ears are laid back, she's s still rather shy of the stranger* And.. what's wrong? *she looks down at herself, whispering* I know I'm hideous..

Anami: *she ignores Mono's first question and comes a bit closer* I can detect the sadness coming from you, and it's so powerful, I feel weak against it. But I came here to see if I can try and remedy that.

Monochromia: *sinking closer to the ground, her ears still tucked close to her head, she stares up at Anami with fear as she stepped closer* How could you ever help me..?

Anami: *she lays down bed to Monochromia like a mother, and Mono could feel one of her invisible wings draping over her like a blanket.* How would you like a friend?

Monochromia: I've had friends, *she shivers as she felt the wing wrap around her, but savors its warmth all the same* none of them stayed by me.. *she looks up at Anami, her eyes almost brimming with tears* How do I know you'll be any different..?

Anami: *she holds Mono a little closer, like a soft, gentile hug* I can, and will, protect you. I will not abandon you.

Monochromia: *her voice soft* That's what they all say.. *she looks down at her hooves as she laid down upon the ground, curling her tail around herself*

Anami: Look at me, young spirit. *Mono looked into her golden eyes.* You can trust me, I absolutely assure you of that. I will do whatever it takes to prove it to you.

Monochromia: There's just one thing I want to know.. Why is your shadow an alicorn when you are just an earth pony?

Anami: Because...I am not just an earth pony. Only those who have strong faith in the gods can truely see my alicorn form. To anypony else, I am but a mundane white earth pony.

Monochromia: No wonder I can't see you..

Anami: But that won't get in the way. Regardless of how I look, I can still defend you just as well. *she stood up and went outside, then went over to a large oak tree. She turned, then gave it a good strong buck. There was a loud crack, and the whole tree toppled over like a domino.*

Monochromia: *flickered into view right alongside Anami, staring at the toppled tree with surprise. She turned to Anami,* ...Are you a goddess?

Anami: *sits down next to Mono, a mischievous yet innocent look appearing on her face.* Maaayyyyybee.....

Monochromia: *her eyes widened* You are, aren't you..?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Anami: *bluntly* Yes. *she bowed her head, seemingly in shame, allowing her bangs to fall over her eyes.*

Monochromia: *tilted her head questioningly at her* Is that a bad thing?

Anami: No, it's not a bad thing. I'm just suprised you figured it out on your own.

Monochromia: I can't help it if it's obvious. *she shrugged*

Anami: You have sharp eyes, young one. *she draped one invisible wing over her again and lowered her voice to a whisper* That is a very admirable trait. Do not ever forget that.

Monochromia: I won't. *her ears finally perk up, she's not afraid anymore*
