Words Below:

Things are not always what they appear to be.  Ridley sat down in a field of flowers and looked up at the night sky.  She thought she could see Earth in the distance.  It was the home of her ancestors, a place that was no longer suitable for life of any kind.  They destroyed each other in a huge war with biological, nuclear, and other kinds of weapons.

Ridley was a genetically enhanced human who kind of looked like an elf from old Earth folklore.  She lived with her tribe on the terraformed asteroid Ceres, one of the few places that could still support life.  Many people thought the destruction of Earth would make them realize the futility of war.  Instead many people from the various factions involved made it their goal to wipe out all intelligent life that did not belong to their respective groups.

Ceres had been neutral in the war but that did not seem to matter.  It was only a matter of time before someone decided to come there and use the tribe for political purposes or worse still completely wipe them out.  All they could do was watch the sky and prepare for the inevitable.

Some other humanoid elves about her age came out to see what she was doing.  They consisted of both men and women in a wide variety of outfits and hairstyles.  She talked with them about her concerns.  They tried to convince her nothing was going to happen but it was difficult to convince her when they were not even convinced themselves.

Ridley was just about to leave when she noticed a spaceship in the distance.  It came closer and closer as it got bigger and bigger until it filled most of the night sky.  A loud booming voice told them to surrender.  Some of them did surrender.  Others made futile attempts at defying them but harsh words and ineffective missiles were the only things they had.

Those on the spaceship did not care how the people on Ceres responded.  They only told them to surrender to make it look like they actually gave them a chance.  A photon missile was launched without a second thought.  Ridley and all the people on Ceres were destroyed ... except that was not what happened.

Ridley regained consciousness and removed the virtual reality device from his head.  He was a human male in his late 20s and had been playing Beyond Earth, the latest in a long line of virtual reality games.  It was the twenty-second century and VRPGs were really popular.  Some, like Ridley, even used the optional hypnosis device so they could experience things from the point of view of their character.

All the virtual destruction, including his own death, seemed a little too real.  It was something he needed to consider the next time he used the optional hypnosis feature.  However, this would not stop him from using the hypnosis feature again!
