William was a teenager who had just started driving. At times he drove rather recklessly. Both his parents and his friends got on to him about it. He told them he would try to do better but never really gave it much thought. In September, he drove to the mall and discovered a magical shop he had never seen before. Among the various items they had for sale was something called a life saving device. It looked like a miniature lava lamp with its various colors moving around as he turned it in different directions. Because of the scolding he got for his driving, he decided to buy it as a joke.

The following January, William was speeding on icy roads without a seatbelt when he lost control of his car and hit a tree. He should have been killed instantly. Instead he, or she, got out of the car as if nothing had happened. She looked down at herself and discovered she was in a body she did not recognize. She had become a little girl dressed entirely in pink with her legs exposed to the cold. Despite this she did not feel cold. In fact she did not feel anything. The man who was a cashier at the magic shop appeared in front of him.

"Willow!" he shouted to her.

"It's William," said Willow.

"Your name is Willow now," he explained. "When you hit that tree, your life saving device activated. It gave you another chance at life with a different younger body with different features. It also sent me a message to come and let you know what is going on. As far as everyone else is concerned, you no longer exist in this world. Once you enter your house, your life will begin except everyone will know you as a girl in elementary school named Willow. They will not remember William ever existed."

"Why did you do this to me?" demanded Willow.

"Would you rather be dead?" the man argued. "Besides I did not do anything. It was all the result of your life saving device which you purchased from my store. If you like, I can send you back to your house but after that you are on your own. You will once again be susceptible to the cold so I would recommend changing clothes once you're there."

Willow searched the car for her life saving device but could not find it. She guessed it disappeared once it activated. Her new body was the life saving device in a new form. Her old body could no longer be found. Not knowing what had happened, Willow gave up looking for the life saving device and accepted the trip home.

Just like Willow had been told, as soon as she opened the door her parents reacted to her presence. They did not ask what happened or where she had been. It was like she had just been outside for a few minutes. However, they did ask her about her unusual choice of clothing. Willow told them she would change and change she did. She did her best not to take quite so many careless risks because the life saving device only worked once.
