Brandon knew a species of tiny people lived in his backyard. Sometimes they would enter his house and run away whenever he came near. The first few times, he was unsure if he actually saw something resembling a human being or if it was just his imagination. However, after repeated viewings of the tiny creatures, he knew they were real.
He called them "the little people" for lack of a better name. Sometimes he would leave food or other items he thought they would find useful out for them. The items kept disappearing but never while he was around. He guessed they were extremely cautious about letting humans know of their existence.
Despite this, Brandon told his friends and others about their existence. Most thought he was lying or crazy or both. A few even mocked and ridiculed him. If anyone actually did believe him, they kept silent. With such verbal assaults, even he was having trouble speaking about it.
One day when he saw a little person run across his room he shouted, "I wish I could see the little people with my own eyes!" There is a saying, "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it." Brandon had heard this saying before but was not thinking about it at the time. Even if he had been thinking about it, it would not have made any difference. He never expected his wish to come true. He just wanted the little people to know he was interested in them.
As soon as he made his wish, he started to change. He shrank. While he was shrinking, his body became female. His clothes also changed and kept pace with the other changes. His hair, while remaining the same color, grew longer. It covered his eyes and face. For some reason, that was the only change she noticed. Everything else became lost in a blur.
Brittany brushed the hair out of her face. She felt dizzy and disoriented. For a few seconds she was not entirely sure where she was. Then she noticed a safety pin that she could use as a hair clip. Looking around the room she saw it was unoccupied so she decided to risk it. She ran over and grabbed the safety pin.
"This way!" another girl about her age cried out to her. "You always take such big risks. Do you want them to see you?"
Brittany thought about this. She actually did want the humans to see her but she knew that was not the answer the others wanted to hear so she remained silent. As she clipped her hair with the safety pin, she thought about what an encounter with a human might be like.
"Someday!" she said to herself.
