Description Like a Saber Tooth Cat, but way cooler. I admit I took some creative liberties, with the anatomy, but I tried to stay quasi true to the mammals design. The smooth head, the sloping brow, not sharp like a cats, but very lightly angled with massive protruding fangs. The chin seems to a little bit debatable, if it were double forked, or single? I would go with single design here.

This little piece I dedicate to, Who inspired this lovely prehistoric lady.

All the more room for more comments as I enjoy hearing from you. And thank you, she is fun to draw, the stripes in particular.

If you love stripes, then you must love my Amanda.  She's a tiger-striped red fox.

She sounds lovely, do you have a picture of her?

Well, actually, she's my icon but, I do have three full length drawings of her on my DA page.  Just go to the gallery and you'll see them or, if you'd rather, I can send you the links to those three drawings.  Just let me know which you'd rather do.

I opted for pillaging throughout your gallary, and you have some great work in there. I really like some of the pieces you have, it was only to my great regret that I did not recognize the language.

If you're referring to the language in the story, it's no wonder you didn't recognize it.  That language was one I created, based loosely on the Japanese language, especially for the story.

That's why. And here I was left wondering.

No problem.  When I joined the USAF way back when, during basic training, I was given a test on language and passed it.  (It was a made up language.)  Because of this, I thought that I might be able to create a language for my story.  It looks like I was successful.

And you did a good job too, nice to see tolkin wasn't the only one to try this.

Well, I don't know about Tolkien, I never could get into his writing style, but I based my created language on the Japanese way of creating words.  In case you didn't know, almost every Japanese syllable has one consonant sound paired with a vowel sound.  Vowels can stand alone as a syllable and syllables can end with an "N" sound.  In my language, I allowed syllables to end in "S" and "R" but not words; words CAN end in "N", though.  I've been tempted to post the dictionary I created along with the language rules I use for created new words.  Do you think this would be a good idea?  Right now, I'm on the fence about doing it.

If you intend to continue with the language, building onto it, then most defiantly I would post the dictionary. As it would be a big help to understanding the details, in particular for me. ^.^

You talked me into it.  Right now, the dictionary needs a bit of an update.  I changed a few words and added a few as well.

Yeah, some time back I decided to standardize the meanings, for example, as I said, cho means male, ro- means family member, and the th- suffix denotes which particular level of family is being talked about.  Originally I had many different, unrelated, words for family members.  Now, I need to go through the dictionary to standardize the base meanings.  So, it may be a little while before I can upload the dictionary, it's 19 pages long.

Not bad at all. I love how you have all these little suffixes that change the meaning of the words. It is these little details that makes it so interesting.

Thank you.  I'm a bit of a wordsmith in that I study words.  One thing I've learned is that most words came into being in the manner in which I described for creating my language.  Words have a base syllable and then prefixes, suffixes and other syllables are added until the word we know is created.  One way of seeing this is in the naming of dinosaurs.  But, all words, especially longer words, are pretty much created the way I described.

I love my thylacosmilus character, that skull design is so strange. I decided to play with the way the deep roots curve across the top of the skull in my design. It is so neat that they are marsupials.

MviluUatusun In reply to Zaphkiellane [2017-06-11 18:16:40 +0000 UTC]

As I understand it, the thylacosmilus' canine teeth continued to grow throughout its life.  So, they weren't hampered if one of the canines accidentally broke off.

Zaphkiellane In reply to MviluUatusun [2017-06-13 11:15:00 +0000 UTC]

That is how it looks, the question is if teeth designed so differently were used in the same way. They could have served a different function altogether. In a lot of the fossil sites here in Texas isolated broken teeth from sabertooth cats are fairly common, though I don't know of any skulls with damaged teeth.

Interesting thought.  I don't believe I've ever seen any smilodon skulls with broken teeth either but we're told that they could be easily broken.  Hmm.

That's what shocked me, the saber toothed tiger look had me thinging if something else. Still her proportions turned out well to my liking.

neorenamon In reply to Code-Shark [2017-06-04 01:18:42 +0000 UTC]

If she was a plant eater, I'd guess the chin could be used for digging, but I think her paws would work better for digging up small prey so I have to wonder if it was part of some kind of mating display?

Well, technically, she isn't a cat.  The thylacosmilus was a marsupial equivalent of the smilodon.

Oh yes. Now that is something you [can find if you look very carefully but still] certainly don't see every day. So easily forgotten, looking back it seems nearly *all* classes of vertebrates have developed saberteeth at some point.
Particularly like the coat. Not only is the hatching very impressive, but like how you've worked in some apparent thylacine. Also, while as you mentioned it isn't all archeologically correct, think perhaps fusing the chin was a good stylistic choice: It gives a far more uniform, cartoony level of size to the facial features. The little valley in the chin is just enough to hint at two fused parts. And the sound effect is a nice touch - and slightly comedic at that - since it's so easily forgotten how nearly all mammals purr at one point or another.

Well done.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed this one, I spent the better part of the night going over pictures, and reading up on Thylacosmilus to try and get a feel for the creature. I went through three sketches trying to develop a chin, including, V, Box, and finally Fused shape. To my surprise I could not find any other art relating to the anthropomorphized version of her though.

Time to start a new trend, me thinks.
