A succeeding development of the three four dash one class submarines, the substantially modernized four dash two class boats, numbered S-22 through S-33, were built beginning in 1931 and marked a substantial modernization in design philosphy for the grecken and their rapidly growing nightfleet. Construction on the original eight type four units ordered was suspended in 1929 following the loss of S-4 with all hands in the Uthen Sea to allow for careful examination of key design elements of the grecken's young submarine fleet. Naval engineers took advantage of this year long pause in production to revamp the excessively conventional four dash one into the substantially more modern dash two class.
With a reworked aft hull, the small type IV boat demonstrated substantially improved handling and a slight increase in submerged speed as well. All the same the dash two boats were ultimately a very minor upgrade in terms of performance, but in terms of naval architecture the design's improved hull demonstrated substantial technical leaps. Matched with a relatively moderate sized conning tower, the four dash two boats were substantial improvements in spite of their modest alterations. Not only were the remaining five ships of the original order constructed to four dash two standards, but an additional order for six more vessels to replace the two decomissioned type I and the four soon to be decomissioned type II boats as well. Ultimately, a total of eleven four dash two class submarines were constructed: notably, all were launched first and foremost under their formal names as opposed to identification numbers, a first in relation to preceeding classes which recieved their names well after their launch.
Pictured here is SCK Scimitar, painted in experimental camoflauge as it appeared in the early 1940s. Unlike the surface fleet, the nightfleet lacks specialized patrol zones, and often exists to cover gaps between the surface fleet's formal patrol regions. While the type IV boats, being comparatively small and coastal in relation to some of their larger counterparts, rarely were utilized for long range patrols accordingly, they soon appeared in the Central Emihst following the conquest of the Maktak and Pongatar Islands, often making longe clockwise and counterclockwise loops starting from either Ethenden or the Urjou Islands and working their way, with the assistance of tenders on the longer legs, around what amounts to the border for the region of influence exerted by the greck. Accordingly, considerably experimentation was done to find an optimal camo configuration for these silent hunters.
