Mirroring the logical progresive development of the Type III-2 class into the GCK's first cruiser submarine design the Type V class , the Type VII-1 class is a logical extension of the Type VI class with very similar modifications, namely extending the hull and conning tower to accomodate additional fuel reserves and a second deck gun, respectively. Measuring in at 374 feet in length, the type certainly demonstrates the necessary design characteristics of a cruiser submarine, and is well optimized for long range operations, if not necessarily demonstrating much novelty. In terms of configuration, the Type VII-1 class submarine very much resembles the Type V it is intended to succeed, down to the placement of the anti-aircraft mounts. Accordingly, it does not represent in any sense a sort of technical advancement on the part of the grecken's nightfleet, but rather simply 'more of the same' in terms of its architecture.
In accord with the traditional annual production committments of ten new submarines every four years (with additional boats being ordered to replace obsolete ones as necessary), it goes to follow that originally ten Type VII class boats were authorized for construction. While still an undeniable advancement over the decade old class it supplemented, the type didn't really offer much of an improvement over the design it preceeded beyond minor performance enhancements; of the ten ordered in 18AF, only five were built to the original Type VII specifications. The remaining five would be built to modified criteria as the Type VII-2 class and trade one of the 127mm main guns for a pair of spotting aircraft.
