Description
Been a short while since i've posted anything, so i'll start the year with this. a couple mistakes here and there, especially with perspective, but i still wanted to make it work regardless.I've decided to do a small series of pics revisiting old mecha ideas i drew or thought up back when i was still in high school. this one's of a panzer frame called 'Iron Clad'. it's piloted by a young engineer/techy named Batch (the education system is based around a caste/career driven one, so students specialize at a young age). his sister Sari calls it the 'Bumbling Bee', much to his chagrin.
Btw, the circular things that look like nipples are actually its eyes - the top part that looks like the head is a separate unit called RAI (Remote Ascendant Intelligence) that aids the pilot with controlling the panzer frame. it's like the relationship between R2D2 and an X-Wing.

At first, I thought it was Bumblebee from Transformers. I figured that was a huge inspiration, though.

Bumblebee was only an inspiration in terms of colour. i gave it the 'bumbling bee' nickname outta fun cos my original colour scheme drifted towards Bumblebee's from the movie, and that when i look at it now, the mech's design is a bit like a big fat bumble bee

Cheers dude it takes forever when you paint the texture urself (not overlay it), but you learn a lot from it anyway.

Al, another very strong piece! Fantastic work. This looks just great, it really just grabs your attention. Lovely use of colour and lighting. I saw the comment there from ChainsawDroid; nice! In a way, the perspective is not as bad as you think though. You'd be at an advantage to remember that great 19th century Realist painters like Jean Leon Gerome actually bent their perspective towards the viewer so that the viewer could feel drawn into the world of the painting. It was intentional and it totally works. I doubt you had it in mind when doing this piece, but the effect here is similar. People get awfully authoritarian with perspective and treat it as if it were a mathematical law. I think the point is to learn it, and then master it. That way you can bend it to your will and add that important dimension to your works. A from me Al!

Very much appreciated my friend! ur insight into art is always fascinating it's very tru; learning something, then mastering it to be able to manipulate it however u want. it's one of those things i love most about art - learning from others and nature while expressing that understanding and knowledge ur own way! and if the icing on the cake is when others appreciate it, the cherry on top is when it inspires them to do the same
I have to say tho, the thought never occurred to me with perspective tho perspective's one of those things i don't refine as much and usually second guess, hahah. but yes, it certainly isn't a law that all art must abide by 100%. excellent point Mr. Phil!

No worries Al. And very well said! All this also reminds me of something Robert McKee (screenwriting teacher master dude) said about writers, though it applies to "painty" types as well:
"Anxious, inexperienced writers obey rules. Rebellious, unschooled writers break rules. Artists master the form."

Even with the small flaws in perspective its your use of lighting and color that really sells it! bravo!

Thnx dude! lighting can be a pain sometimes, but i like it when you do it by accident and it turns out better than wat u originally had planned
