Description Just trying out the whole sci-fi thing. And lens flares. So many. The concept here is goes like this: There is a "colony" of people living in an indoor city. The big housing structure itself could have multiple "hangars" like this holding large populations. Also, the whole contraption is hovering. Yeah, that's right. Hovering megacities are my jam. Buildings hang from the ceiling to conserve space and also because it's super-awesome. I assume that transportation would be by automated shuttles -- too many ships would be flying around to let someone pilot their own ship inside. Dangerous. There would be a "dock" outside for ships. How is the atmosphere controlled? I don't know. Probably, each building has its climate, and the outdoors is low-pressure.
I didn't paint any spaceships, so you can imagine them.

I WANT TO DO A TUTORIAL ON THIS. A couple years ago, I tried painting a futuristic city and it sucked. Now I understand how it's done. More or less. Anyway, I know that I could have really benefitted from a tutorial about this. Interested?

The city itself is hand-painted. The lights either come from nighttime city photos (Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles) or some satellite shots. Some of the lights are hand-painted or manually dodged into existence.

Time: I think around 15 hours. Maybe as many as 20. Longer fiddling than actually working.

Mind blowing

This is quite a fascinating concept. The hanging towers is a pretty smart idea if you can make sure they're permanently secure.

It's a giant cave city!

I just love the concepts of future cities having this stacked concept. This is how I would want to future to look, not something post-apocalyptic.

Thank-you! I'm glad you like it! Maybe I'll redo this concept sometime, make it bigger and better and more convincing.

Very nice, I like it very much! Yeah, there are a lot of lens flares, indeed, but I think they serve the atmosphere quite right. It sure does look a bit cluttered and chaotic, but I think that's absolutely fitting for a dense megacity like this.

On your statement of wanting to make a tutorial on this: Please, do it! I would be very interested!

Thanks, glad you appreciate it! This piece is over a year old now, so I probably won't be doing a tutorial on it at this point, but I might do a newer version at some point.

Thanks!
Yes, apparently the concept of an upside down city has been used many times before, but I didn't know that when I designed this. Thought I was being so original, haha.

Learning from trends around here. I hope you have your flares in a separate layer.

From what I understand: the fewer lends flares, the less cluttered the whole thing will look. There's so many that I can't pay attention to any one of them as outstanding light sources. That said, the highest flare from the biggest structure on the right should be stretched across the picture because it's the most prominent. Hide half of those that aren't.

I tried fiddling with the lens flares, and it didn't really improve readability. The most chaotic element is not the flares, it's the city lights...

I stand corrected. I still insist on the points I posted previously, but if that's not relevant in your opinion, then I'm fine with that.

NICE, I would love to use this/see this used in a story, it would make a kick-ass setting for a number of stories I can think of.

PS: I do write, but I don't upload that to dA because it's either too crude, just a concept, or in my native language.

Haha, if this inspires you for writing, go for it! I was thinking it would be fun for a movie or game (duh), especially when the main character had a crisis situation and had to take manual control of a spaceship indoors, or save a building that had an oxygen leak, etc. Could be fun. As I said, if you want, feel free to write about it!

Might I draw inspiration from this as well? Really cool concept, I would make some minor changes like rather than hovering it may be 'suspended' by Orbital Elevators (Halo style), created to expand Hong Kong in a far future setting. It's part may be somewhat brief but could easily be expanded on if I decided
