Description
A Sushi making tutorial!Ingredients: Rice, Mirin, Veggies, Meat, Seaweed.
1. Prepare all of your ingedients ahead of time and place them around the table for your convienience.
2. Invest in a sushi mat. Seriously... you can't really make sushi without it. Why not? because if you want straight nice sushi, ones without lumpy parts... then you want a sushi mat. it makes rolling sushi easier
3. Mix your rice with mirin. It is best if you mix mirin right when your rice as finished cooking that way it mixes evenly. Wait for rice to completely cool before use.
4. When cutting your veggies/meats, cut them in LONG strips. ofcourse... you don't have to but it makes cutting the sushi later on a whole lot easier. no bits or pieces will fall out while you are cutting it. *I used small pieces because... it was left overs and all i had*
5. Put your seaweed on the mat. then place your rice all over the seaweed leaving only an inch at the top. *you'll notice i did not do this... i actually wasn't paying attention. i was more concerned about keeping the flys away and the wind from knocking over all my work*
6. Place all your ingredients horizontally across the rice in the center.
7. roll the sushi using the mat. take care not to roll the mat INTO the sushi!!!! You want to lift up the mat *part your holding* up as your roll it along.
8. once rolled, cut it into about... half inch pieces. *or any size you prefer*
9. Now, if you chose to use sesame seeds... you could have either placed it inside with the rest of your ingredients or chose to put it as a topping. once your sushi its cut just sprinkle some of it on top. this is the part where you add in other sauces if you please.
10. Place on plate and eat!
XD not to hard to make really. Note... i sort of made it to look complimentary to *Mel-P 's Crab Wonton tutorial. check that out here: [link]

avocado and carrots then I add egg, tuna, or shrimp with it. you can use bell peppers, cucumbers, or other favorite veggies. Make sure to cut the ingredients into long strips, not short pieces like I did in the picture or it will be difficult the cut the whole thing later.

to make the cutting easier i highly suggest to cut your ingredients in long strips rather then the small pieces that i show in the tutorial. other then that it is very simple and easy to make! Enjoy!

I was thinking that as well, but I was just looking through. My family wouldn't like it, and I'm not sure what the seaweed tastes like. Could you tell me?

The green nori can taste sweet or salted. Red Nori tastes burnt and bitter to me. when wet it can become chewy and get stuck in your teeth... otherwise its sorta like delicate paper. I'd rather much use it either in sushi or shred it up and use it like seasoning for rice. lol i guess its sort of hard for me to describe.

That's ok, I'll stick to paying for it instead. My food tends to be rather poisonous sometimes...

well there is sushi that does not have raw fish in it. how about trying grilled eel??? its pretty good! but you want to make sure you get it fresh, not something thats been sitting around otherwise its not going to taste as good as the ones JUST MADE! its one of my favorites! Or egg custard ones? they are lightly sweet and tasty. i think they make tempura ones too. XD

this is so simple and great! makes me hungwy...~~
I know this is a weird question, but is there any tasty substitute instead of seaweed that I could use?

Corselia In reply to qazak [2011-03-21 04:13:46 +0000 UTC]
uuummm.... that is a very good question. i guess instead of using seaweed you can just make the roll first... then spread either black or white sesame seeds all around the roll before cutting it! or maybe use furikake seasonings which is normally used to season rice anyhow!! Or perhaps you can use binito flakes or if you want it to be a vegi substitute you can use a lettace leaf or spinach leaf!!! lol maybe those would be good substitutes?

I definately wouldn't use a serrated knife. (probably spelled that wrong...)as it gets caught on the seaweed. I would cut it while the seaweed is fresh and dry, not even the slightest bit moist. and use a really really sharp knife that isn't serrated. also to make cutting easier... you want all your fillings to be in LONG strips, not short ones like i did for the tutorial. One of these days i'll go back and fix the tutorial so that it is more correct. lol; hope that helps

Thanks for the advice! but um, I'm NOT really a huge know it all of the kitchen (lol and I spend most my weekends at the kitchen ) but serrated means like it has those sharp "teeth?"

Something that will work just as good in the place of a bamboo mat is a moist towelette-- just spread around a bit of salt, and it even adds to the taste, and works just as well : )

XD I'll have to try that sometime! It would be easier for beginners to start off this way instead of having to spend money buying all these materials.

Yes, but I've only made sushi a few times, and I don't have the monet to buy a mat, lol

lol goes with what i was saying before. alot of the members of my bento group don't have money to buy such materials so knowing different solutions to reach the same effect is very helpful! I"ll try the paper towel one out and see how it goes!

It turns out pretty well for me : )
Just use a nicely-sized dich towel, run it under some running water, and wring it out.

I don't know how I missed this! I think number six helped me the most. I never knew to lift the mat as I rolled, so I'd roll it large and end up with weird looking rolls.
Do you have a tutorial for cooking the sushi rice? I've been cheating and using regular rice since I keep scorching the other.

Corselia In reply to lonewylfe [2009-11-03 19:41:59 +0000 UTC]
glad it helped. I do not have a tutorial for cooking rice. You can use any sort of rice you wish for sushi but the best type is Nishiki brand. it is a short grain rice that is more gluntinous and sticks and holds together more for making sushi. I own a rice cooker. I regularly consume rice due to my ethnicity. If you regularly eat rice it is a good investment to purchase a rice cooker! It will cook the rice for you in 15 minutes and not burn at all. you can even leave it in the kitchen to do other things. And even if you do not cook rice regularly... really small 1-2 serving ricecookers are available.

Hmm, I'll have to go look for a rice cooker then. Any suggestions as to a good brand, features, etc?

They are all basically good but i think Tiger brand is probably a good choice. i've had those brand before and they generally last quite a LONG time.
