...in the magical land of Equestria......There was an epic space battle.

I learned a lot.
A more classical/iconic themed interpretation with both physical and magical aggression to their duel (I figure sisters would fight at a more personal distance).
Photoshop CS3. Wacom Intuos 3.
A million-jillion hours and a million-jillion layers.

How did you approach doing the stars?

Six months. Over one hundred layers.
Public domain Hubble/NASA images and custom photoshop brushes.
Stars and starfields are difficult to render accurately--the randomness is lost. The universe does a better job at painting stars than I do, so I collaborate with it. It's also a huge waste of time to draw every little star.

Scatter is perfect for something like this.
Make a HUGE brush out of a starfield... and then crank that scatter up. With plenty of rotation on the x and y, and variation of size...? Perfect stars! Every time.

How much layers did you end up with when you decided that it was finished?

I'm not going to count, but I know it's over one hundred.
One of the last layers before it was flattened: "Layer 138".
I did create more after I flattened it, and then continued to paint.
It takes about two minutes to open or save the .PSD file.
