...in the magical land of Equestria......There was an epic space battle.

This took a while to complete... many, many hours...
I learned a lot.
A more classical/iconic themed interpretation with both physical and magical aggression to their duel (I figure sisters would fight at a more personal distance).
Photoshop CS3. Wacom Intuos 3.
A million-jillion hours and a million-jillion layers.

at first I hadn't noticed Celestia's head and all I could see was Celestia and Nightmare Moon as the same mare! she didn't just rule over day AND night.... she literally WAS day and night!
Then a bit later I saw it and I was all... OH so thats NMM and THERE is Celestia's head! XD (trail of lightning helped me find it after I started to recover from the awesome misguided view I had on this)
Love it NMM is BADASS and one can only imagine what god like battles in the series they would of had if it had a teen rating! NMM got so gimped in s1 with that Young rating
Love the colors on NMM they melded beautifully into Celestia giving me pause never realizing it was just NMM on the left side as I pictured you making some interpretation of her being both the Night and Day and each side revealed a piece of her. IDK seems silly but it was cool and if you don't focus on Celestia's head.
You can see the bodies and NMM's wing are just one with Celestia as NMM's right wing/leg, neck and head being the top left half of her in the dark side and Celestia's body being her own on the rest, with both manes being just one giant mesh forming her celestial aurora mane in the sun and the other radiating a sea of stars and night itself that flowed in the rest of the left half of her mane, veering into the Moons darkness.
Should of maximized the picture sooner but it really caught me off guard how awesome it looked when I opened it up to see this. Fantastic

Yes. Combination of painting, collage (with public domain images from NASA), filters, brushes, masks.
I have used this particular background for details in other works of mine though, since I spent so much time making it ("recycling assets").

Once upon a time... There was a artist names CrappyUnicorn who was an experienced and talented artist who created a piece between two sisters which was named Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, which other pieces pales in comparison, the piece shows how the sisters put up a sad battle between each other, because of ones jealousy, in the end, one will win and one will lose and wallow in a pitiful pit of despair and sadness.
