On a late spring day more than a year ago, I got up early, packed some snacks and bottled water into a bag and hopped in my car (yes, I have one and it’s adorable, I just don’t use it a lot).

My neighbor, Mrs. Ingram, was out for a morning walk with Lucy, her giant sweetie-pie Doberman/German shepherd mix and my all-time favorite doggo. She asked where I was off to and I replied I was heading to Huesos Blancos for the day.

As she told the police and the news later, “I told that girl to stay hydrated and take plenty of sunscreen.”

The Huesos Blancos, for those that don’t know, is a desert about forty-five miles south-east of El Milagro. It covers over 1200 square miles and is mostly flat, though it has some amazing rock formations and canyons that have been used for filming movies and TV shows. In the summer, it can reach temperatures of 114 degrees Fahrenheit in the midday sun. Highway 101 skirts the western edge of it and a third of the area has been turned into a state park and camping ground. That’s probably where I was headed?

But when my car was found two days later, it was just pulled over onto the shoulder at a random spot some fourteen miles from the park entrance. And where was I?
