The convention center was already hopping by the time we pulled up. The lobby alone was full of men and women and others all dressed in every kind of costume from every kind of media. Comics, movies, manga, video games, TV, anime, comic strips, even real life superfolk! It was amazing! And the atmosphere was one of pure acceptance, no matter how polished or not the costumes were or how obscure the character choice. It’s like Ree herself once explained to me: “Cosplay is all about personal expression. It’s the act of announcing one’s true self through the choice of disguise.”

(She claims she doesn’t remember saying that; saying she must’ve been “really blitzed.”)

Regardless of what the whole thing was “about,” I was already having fun (and there were a lot more people dressed even more skimpy than me, so I felt less self-conscious). There were vendor tables and photo booths and crafts tables I was immediately interested in checking out, but Ree instructed me that the first thing you had to do when attending a cosplay gathering was “promenade” - basically showing off and checking out everybody else.

Sounded good to me and that’s what we were just about to do when a special guest made an unannounced and very dramatic appearance!
