Description
April is a big month for us. On April 12th, Ratchet & Clank rockets onto the PlayStation 4 . And just a couple weeks later, on April 29th, the dynamic duo will find themselves on the big screen in their first feature film . “Surreal” couldn’t even begin to describe it.
We’ve been extremely fortunate to be part of the Ratchet franchise from the very beginning. Back then, a small team of scrappy developers set out to introduce a couple new heroes to the PlayStation universe. The production of R&C for the PlayStation 2 was fast paced, unpredictable and in many cases, instinctive. Almost on a subconscious level the team connected with the material and worked tirelessly to bring a memorable, all ages experience to gamers.
Fast forward 15 years, and many of those same developers found themselves in a truly unique situation. What if you had an opportunity to re-envision the work: to leverage artistic growth and gameplay experience while broadening the original vision. It’s the closest experience we’ve had to a time machine–sitting beside a younger self re-imagining concepts, while building, refining and expanding the franchise. We had an absolute blast.
Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is many things: classic, modern, a graphical powerhouse, a new beginning. But most importantly, to us, the game represents the passion of a dedicated team who wanted to create the absolute best Ratchet experience possible.
Alongside the game production, we were equally fortunate to serve as the Lead Visual Designers for the feature film. From day one, the entire movie staff displayed a remarkable desire to embrace the franchise and craft a truly authentic experience. Insomniac was involved each step of the way and everyone joined forces to celebrate the source material. From the humor, the visuals, classic rock star voice cast and galactic action, this was the Ratchet franchise through and through. Watching them on screen was a lot like seeing your best friend get their first big-time acting gig. Yup, “surreal”.
So if you’re into style, humor and heart, please help us spread the word. Ratchet & Clank represents a 15-year passion project for us and we can’t wait to see where their next chapter leads.

when i first played ratchet and clank i had no idea what it was about. but when played it it felt right seeing the characters, firing the guns, facing the enemy's and boss's, seeing the unique planets were all so amazing. when i got a ps3 and played tools of destruction i got that same feeling i did when i played going commando on the ps2. everything about this game is amazing from the places you go to the guns you shoot. its a game that you just can come back to and have a good time wither its in the arenas or missions. so here's to where ratchet and clank go next on their adventure for we will be with them every step of the way.

I'm here (albeit late) to say that tonight as I go to the theatre to see Ratchet and Clank on the big screen, I'm gonna cry. Not necessarily because I see of any sort of heart-wrenching drama or rather heart-warming moment, but because it's them. It's you. And I'm just so proud to witness this success that you have made, to see what you guys have made for us: a little momento of what has been, and what's to come, in the form of this animated feature. If says a lot! It says to me that you guys (the developers and team) care for our dynamic duo just as much as we (the fans) do. It says that while we honor the past, we keep moving forward in order to take this series to even greater heights in every way. I see this movie as a tip of the hat towards the franchises older fans and its beginning, as well as a welcome to new fans and the future. It's been a blast--wink-- traveling on this adventure with all of you. I'm sure it sounds strange for one to say that a game series could carry such an emotional substance but that's exactly what Ratchet and Clank has done for me. It inspired me to draw (thanks again, CreatureBox, for being a source of that inspiration), it inspired me to write, it inspired me to get involved and contribute, and it inspired me to be my own unique self. Rachel and Clank has been a constant in my life of changes and shifts, from my own character to circumstances out of my control. For some reason, despite all that I have left behind, this never left. I couldn't explain why if you asked, but I guess one could say it's thanks to you. There's nothin' like our good ol' Ratchet and Clank, and there never will be! Thank you all for your years of hard work and dedication to this franchise! I believe in you guys to usher in a new slew of content to inspire fans like you have with me. Keep up the great work, and here's to a the past and future of Ratchet and Clank!

I can't express how much I'm in awe of you guys. To come this far, to take so many risks, and to see it all pay off in the end is such a rare feat in today's world. You all rightfully deserve it, the visuals and designs of this game are so thought out and absolutely gorgeous!
I grew up not having any consoles until the PS3 and I got Tools of Destruction as one of my first games. Never could I guess that there would be such an amazing world to offer... and continued to buy each game as it came out since then. In "A Crack in Time" I spent so much time on the Insomniac moon, and unlocking everything I could to get an inside look as to how it all works and soon enough I discovered you guys on devart! You all have inspired me to pursue a career in gaming because you gave me a reason to have faith that the little guys could make it big
This year, I'm not in the financial position to get the game on the release date, but I've played the demo at a local video game store and kept shouting HOLY CRAP THIS IS GORGEOUS on every turn. You've really outdone yourselves. Thank you for making this game possible!

Congratulations to you! I know that this game and the movie will be amazing! A lot of my friends and I will be watching it when it comes out!
Ratchet and Clank has been a big part of my childhood growing up! I remember I was at the mall with my dad and I saw the game commercial for the first time! I was blown away by the weapons, the style and just the exciting vibe it gave off.
I knew I had to get my hands on this game and I begged my dad to buy me it. The day I got it, I was hooked! could not stop playing it, i would replay the game over and over and over. The day when I heard that you guys were making the second game (I was in grade 5 or 6?), I couldn't believe my eyes that the sequel was coming out! Of course, the day it came out I purchased it and play the HELL out of the game! same thing will all the Ratchet and Clank games that came out after it.
I remember I used to email you guys about all these grand ideas I had for Ratchet and Clank, I used to send my fan art doodles and such but of course you guys can't accept ideas outside.
Insomniac Games has always been a dream game company that I want to work for one of these days. Today I'm about to graduate from the Animation program from Sheridan College, about to enter the entertainment industry. I aspire to become a concept artist and your art has been one of my biggest inspiration! Reading this gives me the inspiration to work harder and one day, I hope to join you guys at Insomniac Games!
Keep rockin!

Legally blind, in high school my eye doctor had me playing video games to improve eye hand coordination and tracking. I was put on a diet of Tetris and those "newfangled 3d platformers" for depth perception and coordination skills. You guessed it- Ratchet and Clank was my first video game.
14 years later, I'm not only still playing Ratchet, but my ability to track and process 3d visuals has literally doubled. My eyes are still crud, but they're no longer double-crud. I'll never be able to drive, but I can at least hoverboard, in no small part thanks to you guys.
I sew by feel now, and I've since made cosplay based on your amazing art (profile pic, ha!).
Keep up the awesome. A group of us will be streaming RCPS4 on April 15 for charity for the hospital where I was diagnosed and treated as a thank you to them.

iIcan't believe im 22 and so super excited for both the movie and the game (perhaps a little more excited for the movie because it will be something completely different - i mean, i've even bought the accompanying book)
Best part is that i have a friend just as excited for it and wants to see it with me, if the movie comes out in norway... (crossing my fingers) R& have had such a huge impact on my childhood and getting a reimagined version of the game - i can't believe how excited i am!
currently doing a rerun of all the games (excluding the psp ones) and i'm having a blast. I now also get some of the more mature jokes (wow, guys some of those were risky, i applaud you)
I'm so proud of how proud you are. It sounds weird, but I can just imagine how amazing it must be to be allowed to do a project like this, and judging from the trailer, honouring your own franchise so much. It's simply amazing, and I have such high expectations that i know will follow through.

I just bought a Playstation 4 today, just for this game! (okay, maybe for a few other games also - but THIS game is the main reason!) I'm so very stoaked to see what's in store for Ratchet & Clank's re-imagining. Everything just looks so beautiful! Words cannot describe how excited I am to explore all these reimagined planets, see the new characters, the reimagined classic characters, weapons and so much more. Us R&C fans are so lucky to have you guys on board the whole way, including the movie! Unfortunately it doesn't look like the movie is releasing in New Zealand cinemas... but I will get the physical copy when it's out.
I also preordered 2 copies of the game (US and NZ copies) haha.
So yeah! Here's to an amazing upcoming game! Love this artwork too, be excellent to have this as a poster on the wall ^^ I so look very forward to seeing more art for the game and movie in the coming weeks ^^ I shall give my full thoughts once I get my hands on it!

I've been excited for the movie since the day it was announced. Admittedly I only got into the series about five years ago when I randomly decided to buy and play the first game. I had played it a bit before with my cousin when I was younger but I had forgotten about it. I was hooked and decided to play the next game. I'm a bit sad that I didn't get into the series earlier, but better late than never right? I've finally saved up enough money to buy a PS4, so I'll be able to play the game and see the movie! I can't wait. It's not every day that one of your favorite video game characters gets a movie! I'm really looking forward to wherever the series goes from here. I'm glad the series is still going at all to be honest. It seems like Ratchet is the last in the line of classic platforming video game characters. So many of these series have died out, or nearly so (Banjo-Kazooie, Insomniac's own Spyro, Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot) and it's nice that Ratchet is still around and seems to be as strong as ever. 3D platformers went out of style for a while, but they seem to be slowly coming back. Rayman has returned, and Sly Cooper got a new game and is also getting a movie. These were the games that I, and many others, grew up with. They hold a special place in our hearts and define a large part of our gaming history. I've been playing the first game again recently, and I enjoy it more every time. Thank you for helping to create and continuing to support this series.

Thanks for creating my childhood (essentially hah)! This game was one of the major influences in my decision to join the gaming industry, and I couldn't be happier that it's still being made. And as a movie!
I'm also curious- how much of this image was rendered, and how much painted over? Or is it 100% render with just compositing and colour/level tweaks? Because I remember a lot of the older images being painted over and tweaked quite a bit from the original models (like added fur and such).
Great stuff!

First, we're honored to have had an impact on your childhood. That really means a lot. As far as the image, this was created through a partnership with Rainmaker (the creators of the film). We worked with them on all the raw poses, then all the composition was setup during the painting process. All the environment and atmosphere, FX, and color adjustment were done in the illustration phase. Since the renders are highly detailed, they required less painting than keyart images from the past.
