Description Man, it feels like I haven't posted anything this. Oh, wait, I haven't - because it's a new year! As for whether or not it will be any better than the last few years have been, one can only hope (that a meteor specifically targeted at the fiesta we call a government comes falling out of the sky). Either way, I'm back and with a new entry into the Hybrids fan art series . . . sorta . . .

As with many of his watchers, I'm a fan of  's original Hybrids series. If you haven't heard of or seen it, I highly recommend it, though no actual story has been produced. In short, a portion of the city population is suddenly spliced with animal DNA by a mad business mogul and then forced into a quarantined zone fittingly nicknamed "The Zoo", where they are treated with as much care as the animals they've become - which is to say, not very well. Yep, the humans are being assholes again. Of course, it's not all their fault, as some of the Animen (Manimals? Anipeople?) inside The Zoo are assholes, too, taking the "survival of the fittest" mantra a bit too far and using their newfound animal instincts and abilities to put them at the top of the food chain; that often means the carnivores attempt to eat the herbivores in order to survive when resources become too low. The story itself then revolves around a group of Animen (Manimals? Anipeople?) that are looking to try and keep everyone from eating one another and, eventually, find a cure to their current affliction.

In this case however, we're focusing on that very group of Animen (Manimals? Anipeople?)! Yep, this is an art trade with none other than themselves! Greatly intrigued (and perhaps even a little impressed) with my previous work on the incidentals, they wanted to see my own spin on the main characters of the series. Here, I wanted to portray them as they were before they formed a team together, some having been residents of The Zoo longer than others.

Behold, my take of Hybrids Main Cast!

Gorilla - Codenamed "Prime", he is still new to The Zoo and learning the ropes of how to survive in this new, urban jungle. His immense strength and willingness to fight for others has earned him a reputation throughout the zone, inspiring others that had once given up to not lose hope. Upon learning how influential his actions were becoming, Prime decided to step into the role and sought to find others like him - those that hadn't been consumed by their greed and primal instincts - so that they might all see the day when a cure is found; and if not that, the day they might be treated better than the animals everyone sees them as.

Indian Flying Fox - Codenamed "Echo", she has been a resident of The Zoo for much longer, but still is having difficulties adjusting to her new way of life - specifically, her lack of functional hands. With bat wings comprising a bat's entire arm and hand, she can no longer use her fingers as she once had in her previous life, a fact which terribly upsets her. She instead has to resort to using her feet, which not have better dexterity, but digits that aren't consumed by a patagium. Her wings also greatly limit what kind of clothing she can wear and for much of her time before joining up with Prime, she wears a poncho fashioned out of old towels.

Cheetah - Codenamed "Fastkat", she has been quarantined in The Zoo longer than Prime, but not as long as Echo. In her time, she has had difficulty surviving off the meager supply packages airdropped into the zone - while she has significant speed on her side, she has little stamina and is completely outmuscled by the larger predators at the top of the food chain. This has forced her to take up hunting some of the wildlife that have also been kept inside The Zoo in order to satiate both her hunger and her predatory instincts.

Black Widow Spider - Codenamed "Arachnera", she was originally a member of a goth scene at the local high school, where she briefly received the admiration of her friends before being captured and quarantined in The Zoo. With wicked faces and a personality just as friendly, Arachnera has a bleak out look on life as a whole and is particularly pessimistic about Prime's attempts to establish peace among the zone's inhabitants. Nevertheless, she recognizes that surviving in a group is easier than surviving alone and reluctant helps them in their endeavors . . . for now . . .

Gray Wolf - Codenamed "Warwolf", he has been kept in quarantine about as long as Echo has, where he has established himself as a member of the Wolf Pack - a gang that, while primarily consisting of other wolf hybrids, has other canine species among its ranks as well. Their ruthless tactics to horde as much resources and territory for themselves, as well as their growing willingness to hunt other hybrids to survive however, doesn't sit well with him. Inevitably, he ends up betraying the Wolf Pack in order to save Prime and joins him in his mission to bring the residents of The Zoo together while making a dangerous enemy in the process.

Komodo Dragon - Codenamed "Komodo", she was once a part of the local high school's computer club before she transformed into a hybrid and was shipped off to The Zoo. Though her scaly appearance and predatory nature puts off others most of the time, her kindness and vast, technological knowledge have proven to be invaluable in helping establish some semblance of modern living among The Zoo's residents. Working as a programmer and an amateur electrician, she saw the chance to do more with her skills upon witnessing Prime, Echo, and Eagle Eye take down the corrupt owner of a bar that had been threatening to starve their employees and joined them in their mission.

Bald Eagle - Codenamed "Eagle Eye", he is just as inexperienced in surviving the dangers of The Zoo as Prime. The first to join his group of ragtag heroes, he is a little vain and prides himself on his ability to flight and see incredible distances, as well as his love for the stage. Acting as the eyes in the sky (during the day, at least) , they nevertheless have become fast and close friends, and always having one another's back in any situation. Even if that occasionally means giving up his moment in the spotlight to help save the day.

Welp, there you have it! Here's hoping these guys have proven to be just as interesting as the last bunch!
